Ahead of the commencement of the IND vs SL Test series, England’s Stuart Broad and Jos Buttler talked about Ravindra Jadeja on a podcast on their YouTube channel ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ while discussing their top 10 greatest ever all-rounders.
The duo discussed a spate of legendary names, from Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee, Ian Botham, and Gary Sobers to Ben Stokes, Jadeja, Jaques Kallis, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shane Watson.
Buttler brought up Jadeja’s stellar record in Test cricket. The Saurashtra-born cricketer has so far featured in 89 Test matches. The left-hander has scored 4095 runs at an average of 38, notching up six centuries and 28 fifties. With the ball, Jadeja has snared 348 Test wickets at an average of 25, including 15 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket match hauls.
Both Buttler and Broad played a lot of times against Ravindra Jadeja across formats, with the former labeling Jadeja “a nightmare to face, especially in India.” Buttler also pointed out that Jadeja is one of the only four players in the history of Test cricket to attain the double of scoring 4000 runs and picking up 300 wickets, the other three being Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, and Daniel Vettori.

As he began to talk about Jadeja, Broad promptly brought up the all-rounder’s famous sword celebration every time he reached a fifty or a hundred milestone. The former England pacer said he found Jadeja’s sword celebration a bit annoying, suggesting that he should reserve it only for when he reaches a century.
“His celebration used to annoy me a bit, like, what’s this guy waving his bat around for a 50? I remember I used to say to him on a few occasions that batters actually average 50 and you are carrying on like this. It’s flair, but I would have saved it for a hundred,” Broad said.
Jadeja has enjoyed plenty of success against Broad’s nation, both at home and away. In 25 Test matches against England, Jadeja has made 1547 runs, cracking three centuries and 11 fifties, both the highest he’s achieved against any team. With the ball, he’s taken 77 wickets against England, with two five-wicket hauls, including a 7-fer.

Buttler reckoned Jadeja is underrated as a batsman and praised his adaptability in any situation.
The English keeper-batsman said, “He is a nightmare to face, especially in India. With him, I think about moments, and he’s a proper gutsy player. With his batting especially, when the game was tight, he always seemed to stand up. When his team needed runs, he could do it. He had a bit of a hybrid role as well, where sometimes he would come out at 5 with the ball swinging around. He’s an underrated batter in a funny way.”
Jadeja has been on a rest since the conclusion of the IPL 2026. He returned to action after over two months in the warm-up match against Sri Lankans XI and will have a big role to play in the India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test, which begins on August 15 in Galle.
