Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has shared his thoughts on the Ballon d’Or race. He was asked to choose between two of his club’s best players: Harry Kane and Michael Olise. Hainer said both deserve the award. But he would give it to Kane.
Hainer spoke to BILD about the competition between the two players. He said Olise and Kane are both worthy. However, he feels Kane’s experience and consistent performances give him the edge right now. Kane has been the main man in Bayern’s attack since joining from Tottenham. He has broken many records in Germany.
Even so, Hainer believes the future belongs to Olise. The French winger has adapted to the Bundesliga very quickly. Hainer said Olise still has many years ahead of him to win the Ballon d’Or. He even suggested Olise could win it this year.
Some people have asked if Olise needs to move to another league to reach his full potential. Hainer does not agree. He said Bayern is the best place for Olise to grow. He said the club is very happy to have him. He called Olise one of the best players in the world. He believes Olise can win titles with Bayern and compete at the highest level in Europe. He pointed to Bayern’s Champions League semi-final run last season as proof. He said that is what Olise is looking for.
Vincent Kompany Says Ballon d’Or Race Is Settled
Vincent Kompany believes the Ballon d’Or race is already settled. The Bayern Munich coach spoke before his team’s Bundesliga match at Augsburg. He was asked about Harry Kane and Michael Olise. Both are in the running for the award.
Kompany said the decision has already been made. He added that nothing he says now will change it. He also made it clear that the Ballon d’Or is not on his mind every day. His focus is on Augsburg. He said he would be happy if a Bayern player won the award. But he said team trophies matter more to him. He knows Kane and Olise feel the same way. He thinks that shared mindset is what makes Bayern special.
Kompany was also asked about an award from Markus Soder. Soder is the minister-president of Bavaria. Kompany said he does not want an award for speaking out against racism. He said he does it because it is the right thing to say at the right time. He added that the award is still very nice. According to Bild, Kompany will receive the award at the Bavarian Sports Award 2026 ceremony. It will take place after the Augsburg match.
Kompany gave a 12-minute speech in February. It came after racist abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior. The abuse happened during a Champions League match. Jose Mourinho, then Benfica manager, had also blamed Vinicius partly. For now, Bayern are focused on their Bundesliga goals. Individual awards for Kane and Olise are not the priority.
Harry Kane Nearly Joined Viking Stavanger in 2012
Harry Kane could have ended up at Viking Stavanger. That is the surprising story shared by former Viking scout Gary Goodchild. He spoke to Stavanger Aftenblad before Viking’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Goodchild heard that Kane might be open to joining Viking. This was back in 2012. At that time, Kane was not a big name. He was still trying to make it at Tottenham. He had been sent on loan several times. Those loans included spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich, and Leicester.
The people Goodchild spoke to thought a loan in Scandinavia could help Kane grow. So Goodchild travelled to England to watch him. Kane was playing for Millwall then. But Kane was injured and missed the match. Goodchild went home without seeing him play.
Soon after that, Kane broke into Tottenham’s first team. His career took off from there. More than a decade later, Kane will finally play in Stavanger. He will be wearing a Bayern Munich shirt on Tuesday.
