Punjab Kings are a franchise cricket team based in Punjab and compete in the Indian Premier League. The team was founded in 2008 as Kings XI Punjab and changed its name to PBKS before the 2021 season. The franchise is owned by K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited and has featured several leading Indian and international cricketers throughout its IPL history.

PBKS have reached the IPL final twice, in 2014 and 2025, but have yet to win the championship. Their 2014 team was led by George Bailey, while Shreyas Iyer captained the side to the 2025 final after joining the franchise ahead of that season.

The team continued under Iyer’s leadership in 2026, with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting serving as head coach. Punjab finished fifth in the league standings, recording seven wins, six losses and one no-result match. Although they collected 15 points, they missed out on a place in the playoffs.

History of Punjab Kings

PBKS were among the eight original franchises that competed in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. The team initially played under the name Kings XI Punjab and represented the Punjab region, with Mohali serving as its primary home base.

The franchise reached the semifinals in its first season but struggled to maintain that level of performance in the following years. Its fortunes improved in 2014, when Kings XI Punjab produced one of their strongest campaigns and reached their first IPL final.

Led by George Bailey, the team had an outstanding batting season, with Glenn Maxwell and David Miller among its leading performers. However, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Punjab in the final, leaving the franchise without its first championship.

Punjab continued to compete in the IPL but did not reach another final for more than a decade. The franchise changed its name to PBKS in 2021 as part of a wider rebranding effort.

The team rebuilt its squad over the following seasons, eventually appointing Shreyas Iyer as captain ahead of IPL 2025. Under Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting, Punjab reached the final for the first time since 2014. They lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six runs, finishing as runners-up once again.

Punjab Kings IPL Final Appearances

PBKS have appeared in two IPL finals. Both campaigns ended in defeat, although the 2025 season marked a major improvement after several years outside the final.

IPL 2014: PBKS Reach Their First Final

Kings XI Punjab enjoyed an outstanding 2014 season and finished the league stage near the top of the standings. Glenn Maxwell was one of the tournament’s most explosive batters, while David Miller and Virender Sehwag also contributed to the team’s strong campaign.

Punjab faced Kolkata Knight Riders in the final and posted 199/4 after batting first. Wriddhiman Saha scored an unbeaten century, but KKR successfully chased the target, reaching 200/7 with three balls remaining.

The defeat denied Punjab their first IPL title despite a memorable campaign.

IPL 2025: A Return to the Final

PBKS reached their second IPL final in 2025 under Shreyas Iyer. They finished second in the league stage and advanced through the playoffs to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the championship match.

RCB scored 190/9 in the final. Punjab’s chase fell short as they finished on 184/7, losing by six runs. The result gave Bengaluru its first IPL title and left Punjab searching for its first championship.

Iyer’s performances during the playoffs, including an unbeaten 87 against the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, helped Punjab reach the final after an 11-year gap.

Punjab Kings Season-by-Season IPL Results

PBKS have experienced both strong campaigns and difficult seasons since joining the IPL in 2008. Their most notable finishes include their two runner-up campaigns and their fifth-place result in 2026.

Punjab Kings Owners

PBKS are owned by K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited. The ownership group has included several prominent investors and public figures since the franchise was established.

The team has been associated with Bollywood actor Preity Zinta, who has remained a familiar presence around the franchise. Other ownership partners have included business figures Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia and Karan Paul.

The franchise’s ownership structure and branding have evolved over time, but its connection to Punjab has remained central to its identity.

Punjab Kings Captain and Coach

Shreyas Iyer was PBKS’ captain in the 2026 IPL season, while Ricky Ponting served as head coach. Both were central to the team’s rebuilding efforts before its run to the 2025 final.

Key Players in Punjab Kings’ History

PBKS have featured several major international and Indian players. Some became known for their aggressive batting, while others contributed through bowling, leadership or consistent performances across seasons.

Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell was one of the standout players during Punjab’s run to the 2014 final. His aggressive batting helped the team score quickly during the middle overs, and he became one of the most influential players of that season.

Maxwell’s performances helped establish the 2014 campaign as one of the strongest in the franchise’s history.

David Miller

David Miller was an important part of Punjab’s batting lineup during the 2014 season. Known for his powerful hitting, the South African batter often played the role of finisher and helped the team recover from difficult positions.

He remained associated with Punjab across multiple IPL seasons.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul captained the PBKS from 2020 to 2021 and was one of their leading batters during that period. He won the Orange Cap in 2020 after scoring 670 runs, finishing as the IPL’s leading run-scorer that season.

Rahul’s performances made him one of the most productive batters in the franchise’s modern history.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan captained PBKS during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The left-handed opener brought extensive international and IPL experience to the team and was known for his consistency at the top of the order.

He played a major role in India’s international cricket setup and was one of the most experienced players in the Punjab squad during his time with the franchise.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer became PBKS’ captain ahead of IPL 2025. He led the team to the final in his first season with the franchise and continued as captain in 2026.

His unbeaten 87 against the Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Qualifier 2 was one of the defining performances of Punjab’s campaign.

Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh has been one of PBKS’ leading Indian fast bowlers. Known for his left-arm pace and ability to bowl at the death, he has regularly been trusted with difficult overs in tight matches.

His performances have also helped him establish a place in India’s T20 international setup.

Punjab Kings Home Ground

PBKS’ primary home venue for the 2026 season was the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, near Mohali. The team has traditionally been associated with the Punjab Cricket Association’s stadium in Mohali, but its home-match arrangements have changed across different seasons.

In recent years, the franchise has also hosted selected home games at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The venue is known for its mountain backdrop and has become a familiar setting for Punjab’s late-season home fixtures.

The team’s home venues allow it to connect with fans across the wider Punjab region and neighbouring areas.

Punjab Kings IPL 2026 Season

PBKS finished fifth in the 2026 IPL standings, narrowly missing the playoffs. They played 14 matches, won seven, lost six and had one match without a result, earning 15 points with a net run rate of +0.309.

The team made a strong start to the season and spent time among the leading sides. However, a difficult stretch during the latter part of the league campaign affected their position in the standings.

One of Punjab’s memorable wins came against Lucknow Super Giants on May 23, 2026. Punjab chased down a target of 197, reaching 200/3 in 18 overs to win by seven wickets. Shreyas Iyer scored 101 from 51 balls and was named Player of the Match.

Despite that performance, Punjab could not finish among the top four teams and ended the season in fifth place.
