The Chennai Super Kings have registered their first win of IPL 2026, defeating the Delhi Capitals. But why did DC lose to CSK in this game?
The CSK Vs DC game was Match 18 of the 2026 season of the IPL. The match was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, and the away team won the toss and chose to bat first, a trend that has emerged in the early stages of this tournament.
The Super Kings put up a decent total while batting first, making 212 runs in 20 overs off the back of a scintillating ton by Sanju Samson. In response, the Capitals were bundled out for 189, and CSK won by 23 runs.
Here. We will discuss the three reasons why Chennai Super Kings beat the Delhi Capitals in today’s game of the Indian Premier League.
Why Chennai Super Kings Beat Delhi Capitals
1) Sanju Strikes In CSK Yellow
Sanju Samson was CSK’s star signing ahead of IPL 2026. Brought into the side via a trade with the Rajasthan Royals, which saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran go the other way, the Super Kings’ loyals expected big things from the Kerala native.
However, in the first three games of the season, Samson did not fire, making six, seven, and nine runs across three innings. His misfiring was a major reason behind this team’s poor start to the season.
However, tonight was Sanju Samsoon’s night. He scored his first boundary in the yellow jersey in the first over of the game. He also had an excellent start to his innings. At the end of the powerplay, while skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was struggling at the other end, the wicketkeeper/batter was batting at 45 off 19.
He soon reached his half-century in 24 balls and did not slow down the pace of his innings. Supported by Ayush Mhatre at the other end for much of his time on the crease, Samson stylishly anchored the Chennai innings while dealing in boundaries.
Samson went on to score a century in 52 balls and was not out at the end of the innings at 112 off 55.
It was at the back of Sanju Samson’s ton that CSK managed to reach a respectable total of 212/2 in 20 overs. But this was only a part of the puzzle behind CSK’s inaugural win this season.
2) CSK Finds Early Wickets
Out of the many issues that have ailed CSK this season so far, the biggest has been their bowling. However, today, their bowling attack was to win them the game.
It all started in the powerplay. The Delhi Capitals’ opening pair of KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka seemed to have gotten off to a great start. The two reached the 60-run mark in the fifth over. But then, at the end of that very over, Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Rahul for 18 off 10.
Then, in the last over of the powerplay, the dangerous Nissanka departed for 41 off 24, dismissed by Anshul Kambhoj.
On the first ball following the powerplay, captain Axar Patel departed after making just six off nine, falling victim to Gurjapneet Singh. Finally, to round out a solid start, Sameer Rizvi, the man who has already won two Player of the Match awards this season, departed cheaply at the hands of Jamie Overton in the eighth over.
By the end of the eighth over, DC was struggling at 76/4 with their entire top order gone. But there was still the matter of their experienced middle-order, which could still shift the match in favour of the Capitals.
3) Timely Wickets For CSK
After four wickets fell, the South African duo of David Miller and Tristan Stubbs stabilised the Delhi Capitals’ innings. The two took the team past the 100-run mark and maintained a run rate of 10.
However, before he became too big a trouble, Miller was bowled by Overton in the 13th over for 17 off 14. This left Stubbs on strike alongside Ashutosh Sharma.
The two started taking the game home for DC. But then, before Ashutosh could convert his innings into something big, he was taken care of by Noor Ahmad for 19 off 10.
With Stubbs being the only proper batter remaining, he took charge of scoring boundaries. From 35 off 22 at the end of the 15th over, he reached his half-century in 30 balls in the 17th over. Debutant Auqib Nabi was dismissed for four off two balls.
At the end of the 18th over, the score was 181/7. Tristan Stubbs was batting for 60 off 36, and 32 were required off 12.
But then came the big moment. On the third ball of the 19th over by Jamie Overton, Stubbs lofted the ball and was caught at mid-off. He was fuming, throwing his helmet to the ground and back into the dressing room. The game, at that point, was over.
DC was all out for 189 runs as the Chennai Super Kings won the match by 23 runs, winning their first game this season.
