Fans on social media handed over the title of Cricket’s Nostradamus to MS Dhoni, a moniker that has over the years been reserved only for England speedster Jofra Archer.
This was after an Instagram post of Dhoni’s from 2016 went viral following Argentina’s victory in the FIFA World Cup semi-final over England on Wednesday.
Even among the passionate cricket fans, it feels that cricket has taken a backseat in recent days as the FIFA World Cup 2026 is in its last stages.
The tournament, being co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, has attracted the eyeballs of millions of fans from around the world.
The fever is now at its peak as Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup final. La Albiceleste made one of the most famous comebacks in World Cup history to thump England 2-1 in Atlanta and booked a date with Spain in the final, slated for Sunday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Soon-after the Argentina vs Spain final was sealed, cricket fans shared and reshared an Instagram post made by Dhoni 10 years ago and made it viral. The post is from India’s tour of Zimbabwe 2016 when Dhoni led a group of youngsters and inexperienced players.
In the post, Dhoni is seen sitting and playing FIFA alongside a few Indian players, including Axar Patel, Karun Nair, and Jaydev Unadkat. What caught the fans’ eyes, though, is the simple three-worded caption: “Spain vs Argentina.”
Usually, it has been Archer’s tweets from the past that have been used by fans as a prediction for sporting events. This time, it was Dhoni’s caption that made the fans astonished.

Meanwhile, the major chatter surrounding Dhoni these days is about his fitness. Dhoni didn’t play a single match in the IPL 2026 owing to injuries even though he was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad and traveled with the team.
Without Dhoni taking part in any game and avoiding travel to away matches in the latter half of the competition, CSK finished in the 8th position on the points table, managing six wins in 14 games.

Earlier this month, CSK and head coach Stephen Fleming parted ways after 18 seasons, the longest franchise-coach pairing in the history of T20 cricket.
Under Fleming and Dhoni, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.
CSK’s legendary off-spinner R Ashwin has backed Dhoni to take Fleming’s role as the coach if the former skipper wishes.
Ashwin told Cricinfo, “If Dhoni is willing to do that [take the role of CSK’s head coach], there is no better person that Chennai Super Kings can go after. If not, they need to find someone who will be able to operate independently and take accountability for his or her own actions.”
Ashwin asserted Dhoni’s giant presence in the dressing room as an important factor for the new coach.
“I think there is a small aspect of uncertainty for anybody that will walk into that dressing room,” Ashwin said. “Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a huge name, and he’s still very much a part of the discussion when you’re talking about a squad that will be picked to play,” the former spinner added.
Will MS Dhoni play in IPL 2027?
There is no clarity whether Dhoni will continue in the IPL after not featuring in a single match in the IPL 2026 tournament. The auction is likely to be scheduled in December, while the retention list is expected to be revealed in November.
