While the focus of the trade window ahead of the IPL 2027 auction is mostly on Hardik Pandya, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have rather subduedly made a blockbuster four-player deal involving Liam Livingstone, Jack Edwards, Khaleel Ahmed, and Nathan Ellis.
It seems that CSK have moved out of the fray in pursuit of Pandya. But they have gained the services of two T20 specialist all-rounders in England’s Livingstone and Australia’s Edwards of SRH. In return, they offered two pacers, with the offer being accepted by SRH.
The BCCI confirmed that Livingstone and Edwards have been traded from SRH to CSK, while Khaleel and Ellis are traded from CSK to SRH.
IPL and T20 World Cup winner Liam Livingstone joins CSK
Livingstone, the 33-year-old England all-rounder who was part of the 2022 T20 World Cup-winning English side but was dropped early last year, is now a globe-trotting T20 star.
He won the IPL 2025 title with RCB but was not retained. In the previous auction, Livingstone was bought by SRH for INR 13 crore. However, he featured in only two games for SRH. Upon moving to CSK, Livingstone has agreed to a reduced fee, whittled down to INR 6 crore.
Australia’s Jack Edwards is a 26-year-old medium-pace bowling all-rounder who made his ODI and T20I debuts earlier this year. Edwards was purchased by SRH for INR 3 crore, and his salary will be retained.
Who have CSK traded to SRH?
CSK have traded away seamers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis, both of whom were down with injuries last year, to SRH in return of Livingstone and Edwards.
Ellis, who was bought by CSK for INR 2 crore, missed the entire IPL 2025 season due to a hamstring injury and was replaced by Spencer Johnson in the squad. Khaleel played five matches in last year’s IPL before being sidelined owing to a quadriceps injury.
Khaleel was part of the SRH squad from 2018 and 2021, a period in which he also appeared in international cricket for India.
This is the second time SRH have been involved in the trade window, having already roped in T. Natarajan, another fast bowler, from Delhi Capitals, in return for legspinner Zeeshan Ansari.
Among the fast bowlers in the current setup, CSK have Mukesh Choudhary, Matt Henry, Spencer Johnson, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Madhwal, and Gurjapneet Singh.
Meanwhile, SRH’s pace contingent comprises Pat Cummins, Gerlad Coetzee, Eshan Malinga, Praful Hinge, Dilshan Madushanka, Shivam Mavi, Harshap Patel, David Payne, Sakib Hussain, Bydon Carse, and Jaydev Unadkat. Some of these, though, are expected to be released.
When is the IPL retention deadline date?
The BCCI has extended the retention deadline to November 17 from 15 since some of the franchise captains are involved in the India vs New Zealand ODI series.
When and where is the IPL 2027 auction?
The IPL 2027 auction, which will be a mini-auction, is scheduled for December 16 in Goa.
