Suryakumar Yadav looks set to stay at Mumbai Indians. There was talk that he might leave before IPL 2027. Some reports linked him to Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants. But on Tuesday he shared a video of himself training at Mumbai Indians’ camp. The team also posted the video. It shows him practising at their main training centre in Ghansoli.
The clip is captioned “Back in the groove!” and “Practice, SKY, 360.” He also put it on his Instagram story. The Mumbai Indians logo is visible in the video. People see this as a sign that he is still committed to the team. No official trade or retention has been announced yet.
The rumours started because of his captaincy situation and his form last season. The Mumbai Indians made Hardik Pandya captain after Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar was not given the job. Reports said he might look for a captaincy chance elsewhere. Kolkata Knight Riders were said to be interested. They are looking for a new captain after Ajinkya Rahane retired. Lucknow Super Giants were also mentioned as a possible destination.
Suryakumar has been with the Mumbai Indians since 2018. He played a big part in their title wins in 2019 and 2020. He has scored 4,020 runs in 127 IPL matches. His average is 36.54, and his strike rate is 151.24. But IPL 2026 was not a good season for him. He scored just 162 runs in 15 innings at an average of 20.25. He had two fifties. Mumbai Indians also had a poor season and finished ninth.
Suryakumar Yadav has not played a professional match since IPL 2026. He played in the Mumbai Premier League in June and some club games last month. He could return in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which starts on November 14. He might play for Mumbai. Shreyas Iyer is busy with the national team, so Suryakumar could captain Mumbai in that tournament. All teams must submit their retention and release lists by November 17.
Hardik Pandya Could Leave Mumbai Indians as Punjab Kings Emerge as Leading Trade Option
Hardik Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians is still up in the air. The team is looking at trade options before the new IPL season. But Mumbai have made one thing clear. They will not include Suryakumar Yadav in any swap deal. A source close to the team said Suryakumar is not up for trade. There have been no talks about him, and there will not be any.
Punjab Kings have come up as a possible partner for Mumbai. India’s top left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is one name in the talks. Punjab have not said publicly that they will let him go. Arshdeep can bowl with the new ball and close out games at the death. That makes him a target for Mumbai, who want a frontline fast bowler. A move to Punjab would not automatically make him captain. Shreyas Iyer leads that team.
Rajasthan Royals are also in the picture. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi were named in early talks. But Mumbai seem more keen on a proven fast bowler than on batting or spin options. Jofra Archer could be interesting on paper. But there is no sign that Mumbai have made a formal approach to Rajasthan about him.
Mumbai have plenty of batting already. Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir and Will Jacks give them lots of options. Mitchell Santner also adds depth with the bat. With so many batters likely to play, Mumbai may not want another one who might not get a regular spot. That could explain why they are not keen on Chennai Super Kings youngster Ayush Mhatre.
Mumbai also talked to Kolkata Knight Riders about a deal involving Harshit Rana and a batter for Hardik. But Kolkata did not want to release their fast bowler. Those talks stopped. Now Arshdeep looks like a better fit. Mumbai are weighing their choices. The next few days will show whether Hardik stays at Mumbai or starts a new chapter with another team. Punjab remains a big part of the talks, but no final deal has been announced.
