Fielding rarely gets the attention of batting or bowling, but great fielders save runs, take catches and change matches. Comparing fielders is tricky because the numbers measure only part of the job. Catches are easy to count, but run-saving, direct hits and pressure created through athleticism are harder to measure. That is why Jayawardene leads the catching tables, while Rhodes and Jadeja lead the all-time debates.
Mahela Jayawardene holds the record for the most catches by a non-wicketkeeper, with 440 in international cricket. Ross Taylor and Jacques Kallis follow with 351 and 338, respectively. Paul Collingwood is England’s leading ODI catcher with 108. Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina helped transform Indian fielding in the 2000s, and Glenn Phillips is one of the best fielders in the game today.
All of them have made fielding as exciting as any other part of the game. Here are the five best fielders of all time in cricket history.
A Look at the Best Fielders of All Time
1. Jonty Rhodes (South Africa)
Rhodes is widely regarded as the greatest fielder in history, and he changed how the game viewed fielding. His defining moment came at the 1992 World Cup, when he dived full-length from the backward point to run out Inzamam-ul-Haq. The photograph of that moment is still one of the most famous in cricket.
He took 105 catches in 245 ODIs, which was a record at the time, and 34 catches in 52 Tests. He also held the record for the most catches by a fielder in a single ODI, with five. His main strength was his anticipation and speed, as he could turn half-chances into dismissals and save a dozen runs in the field. A former international hockey player who represented South Africa at the Olympics, he used the same agility on the cricket field. After retiring, he worked as a fielding coach in the IPL, passing his methods on to younger players.
2. Ravindra Jadeja (India)
Jadeja is the best fielder of the modern era, and Rhodes himself has said so. In 2024, Rhodes called him the best fielder in modern cricket because of his ability to field anywhere on the ground, and the Indian fans know him as “Sir Jadeja.”
His strengths are a combination of catching, run-saving and direct hits. He can field at point, cover or on the boundary and take brilliant catches, and his flat, accurate throws from the deep have produced many crucial run-outs. He also benefits his team as a bowler, restricting runs from his own overs. He retired from T20Is in 2024 after India’s T20 World Cup win but continued in Tests and ODIs.
3. Virat Kohli (India)
Kohli is the best catching fielder India has produced. He has taken 344 catches in international cricket, spread across 121 in Tests, 169 in ODIs and 54 in T20Is. That is the most by any Indian, ahead of Rahul Dravid’s 334, and he sits in the world top five for catches by non-wicketkeepers.
He is second in ODI catches behind Mahela Jayawardene, who has 218. Kohli is also known for his strong throwing arm from the deep and for several memorable direct-hit run outs. He raised the fitness standards of the Indian team, and his emphasis on conditioning changed how his teammates approached fielding. His catching numbers are also impressive for a batter who is usually in the outfield.
4. Ricky Ponting (Australia)
Ponting was one of the best fielders of his era, particularly at point and in the slips. He took 364 catches across 560 international matches, including 196 in Tests, 160 in ODIs and eight in T20Is. His direct hits from the infield became legendary, and he was a key figure in Australia’s dominant fielding unit in the 2000s. He is a regular on lists of the best fielders in history.
5. AB de Villiers (South Africa)
De Villiers was a brilliant all-round fielder, as comfortable on the boundary as he was close to the bat. He had a strong arm, great reflexes and the ability to take sensational catches. Rhodes has named him alongside Jadeja and Martin Guptill as one of the best fielders of the modern era. Even among a talented South African fielding group, he stood out.
