Coming off a solid win, the Indian Cricket Team took the field with the same XI that played the last game. But here, it was Bangladesh that won the toss and decided to bowl first. While India got off to a quick start, the Bangla Tigers took the early lead in the game by scalping the two openers, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, within three overs.
With Sharma’s wicket in the third over, in walked Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made his national team debut in the last game. The Andhra Pradesh native came with all guns blazing and started smacking the ball as soon as he came out to bat.
Mere deliveries before the end of the powerplay, captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed as India lost their third wicket. At this point, in walked Rinku Singh, and the match flow took a sharp turn in India’s favour.
Reddy and Rinku together formed one of the most spectacular partnerships in recent memory. It seemed each ball could go outside the boundary rope, and many of them did. The two formed a 108-run partnership for the fourth wicket. By the time Nitish Reddy was dismissed, he had scored 74 off 34, and India was at 149/4 in the 14th over.
From this point, the Indian batters did not pull their feet off the pedal. Hardik Pandya came in and scored 32 in 19 balls. Then Royan Parag scored 15 off 9, and Rinku Singh scored 53 off 29. Even Mayank Yadav, who was batting at No. 11 and in international cricket for the first time, hit a six in the last over. By the time India’s 20 overs were up, they had put up a mammoth total of 221/9.
In response, Bangladesh looked to have gotten off to a decent start before opener Parvez Emon was bowled by Arshdeep Singh in the third over. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was out in the fifth over. Before the powerplay ended, Liton Das was bowled by Varun Chakracarthy too.
From here, Bangladesh’s innings could either go the way India’s did, or the way it actually went. Shanto’s men kept losing regular wickets and could not form a long partnership.
At one point, veteran batter Mahmudullah kept his wicket at one end, and the team collapsed around him. It went from 46/4 to 83/6 and then 120/8 in the 18th over. The Bangladesh inning crawled its way to the end after Mahmudllah was dismissed as well in the 20th over. He had scored 41 off 39 and was the team’s top scorer.
Bangladesh’s final score was 135/9, losing the game by 86 runs. With the win in the second T20I, the Indian Cricket Team has sealed this series. Apart from scoring a quickfire 74, Nitish Kumar Reddy also bowled a four-over spell for 2/23. This was more than enough for him to be named the Player of the Match.
India will now look to whitewash the series by winning the third and final T20I against Bangladesh, which will be played on Saturday, October 12 in Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
