A few months after winning the T20 World Cup, India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under fire of the experts and the ire of the fans as India slumped to two consecutive T20I series defeats for the first time since 2019.
The BCCI selectors made the huge call of dropping the World Cup-winning skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, right after he led the side to the title. Further, new captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Gambhir then excluded Sanju Samson, the Player of the Tournament, after three failures to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his initial opportunities in international cricket, which he has failed to grab.
Under Iyer and Gambhir, India were consigned to a 2-0 loss by Ireland, who registered their first-ever T20I series triumph over India, and England took an unassailable 3-0 lead, with one game to go. India are yet without a win on their UK tour after five completed matches.

1983 World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth has come down hard on Gambhir and the BCCI after India’s embarrassing defeats to Ireland and England.
Srikkanth has, in particular, brought up the points of doing away with Suryakumar and Samson and asked for accountability from Gambhir.
In his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said, “Who is going to question him? No one. Can anyone ask him to be removed? They won’t. Two months back, he won the World Cup. Then, Suryakumar Yadav also won the World Cup two months back. It’s a different yardstick for different people. If you are removing Samson and Surya, remove him too.”
Under Gambhir, India have had high highs of winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup earlier this year. But India also have had to endure the lowest of lows: among the many historic losses, the most stinging ones have been the home Test whitewashes by New Zealand (3-0) and South Africa (2-0) and the breaking of a 16-unbeaten T20I series streak.
Srikkanth reckons Gambhir has lacked in showing remorse for these significant setbacks India have suffered under his reign.
“He’s the one untouchable and was having a great time eating chickpeas even yesterday after the match. He showed no worries about losing. Despite so many whitewashes, he’s unshakable. He talks with no worries, as no one can do anything to him,” the former opener added.
Gambhir’s contract runs until the 2027 World Cup, winning which will cement his legacy further as the coach and allay the disappointments of these series drubbings.
