India vs Australia World Cup Final: India’s decade-long dry run of an ICC title for the senior men’s team has extended after the heart-breaking defeat in the World Cup 2023 final.
Pat Cummins’ Australian team put up their most clinical performance of the tournament in the final. “I think we saved our best for last,” the Aussie skipper put it aptly, and as he had hoped for on the eve of the final, his team silenced the packed Narendra Modi Stadium with their exemplary show.

Australia out-batted, out-bowled, and out-fielded India in the final. The hosts were left wondering what could have been after a month-and-half of utterly dominating cricket that saw them win 10 out of 10 games, heading into the final.

2 mistakes that India made in the IND vs AUS World Cup Final that cost them:
#1. Lack of intent, and lack of boundaries
It’s baffling and unbelievable to accept the fact that India hit only 4 boundaries in the last 40 overs of their batting. Rohit Sharma gave India, once again, a cracking start, and the side was placed very well at the score of 80/2 after 10 overs.
However, after that, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul went into a shell. There was no boundary hit for the next 97 balls, and not another for the next 75 balls. India’s last two fours came from the bats of Shami and Siraj.
Yes, the bowling from Australia was relentless, and the fielding was exceptional. But the risks of going for a boundary needed to be taken to put the pressure back, which India didn’t. ESPNcricinfo recorded there were just 9 boundary attempts from Indian batters in the 180 balls in the middle overs, and only two of them went to the fence. The score of 240 was never going to prove enough in Ahmedabad, where batting has been much easier in the evening, and why Cummins had opted to bowl.
#2. Not opening the bowling with Siraj instead of Shami
For the first time in the tournament, Siraj didn’t bowl with the new ball, and Shami was given the duties. According to India vs Australia World Cup Final, while initially, it looked like a successful plan when Shami dismissed Warner on the first ball he bowled, it later proved that taking the new ball away from Siraj meant he was rendered useless. His strength in the past year has been to pick wickets with a new ball when it’s swinging and moving.
On the other hand, Shami, despite Warner’s wicket, had success in this tournament when he came on as the first-change bowler. In Ahmedabad, he couldn’t control the excessive swing and seam movement and gave away plenty of extras early in Australia’s chase.
