Who Dominates Test Cricket?
In Tests, Ponting is clearly the most successful by percentage. His 48 wins in 77 matches give him a 62.3 per cent win rate, and he lost only 16 times. Much of this reflects the team he had. His Australian side included Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden for much of his tenure, which he inherited from Steve Waugh.
His record is not spotless. Australia lost the Ashes in 2005, 2009 and 2010-11 under his leadership, and those defeats weigh heavily on any assessment of his captaincy.
Smith holds the record for the most Tests as captain with 109 and also the most wins with 53. He took charge as a very young man and kept the job for more than a decade. His wins include landmark away results. South Africa won in England in 2008 for the first time since 1965 and won a Test series in Australia in 2008-09. His record at home is also the best of the three, with 30 wins to Ponting’s 29.
Dhoni’s Test numbers are the weakest of the three, with 27 wins in 60 and a win rate of 45 per cent. But the home and away split is revealing. At home, India won 21 of 30 under Dhoni, at a rate of 70 per cent. Away, they won only 6 of 30 and lost 15. Heavy 4-0 defeats in England in 2011 and Australia in 2011-12 hurt his record. Even so, India reached the No. 1 Test ranking in December 2009 under his leadership.
What About Limited-Overs Cricket?
In one-day cricket, Ponting’s record is among the best ever. His 165 wins from 230 matches is still the all-time record for wins by a captain, and his win percentage of 76.1 is the highest of any captain with a significant number of matches. He won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007 and the Champions Trophy in 2006 and 2009.
Dhoni’s win percentage of 59.6 is lower, but he tops them all in one area: ICC trophies. He led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, making him the only captain to win all three major ICC white-ball titles. His T20I record of 41 wins in 72 matches is also far larger than Ponting’s. He did this with a team that changed constantly, and he often guided chases from the middle order.
Smith’s one-day record is solid, with 92 wins in 150 matches at 64.2 percent, but he did not win a major ICC trophy. South Africa went out in the quarter-finals of both the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, a pattern that followed the side throughout that era.
