Indian athlete M. Sreeshankar thinks that the Paris Olympics 2024 Will be Special for Indian Sports in general, especially for athletics. M. Sreeshankar made this statement at the Sportstar National Sports Conclave where he participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Eyeing the Paris Podium’.
The panel also included other notable Indian athletes like rifle shooter Anjum Moudgil, hockey star Rani Rampal, Tokyo 2020 Paralympic badminton gold medallist Pramod Bhagat, and boxing World Champion Nikhat Zareen.
Paris Olympics 2024 will be Special for Indian Sports and Athletes
Sreeshankar noted that India had come very close to winning medals in athletics with P.T. Usha and Anju Bobby George’s performances, but it wasn’t until Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal in Tokyo 2020 that India got over the mental block and won a medal in athletics. Sreeshankar believes that this breakthrough will inspire other Indian athletes to aim for medals in Paris Olympics 2024.
Nikhat, who became the World Champion in boxing for the second year in a row, says that participating in the Paris Olympics 2024 is her ultimate dream. Although she has never participated in the Olympics before, she feels mentally strong enough to tackle the challenge. The stories she has heard about the Olympics are making her nervous, but she is working hard to prepare herself for the event.
Anjum, who had been a part of the Indian shooting team that returned empty-handed from Tokyo, explained that there were high expectations from the team as they had been doing well throughout the year. However, she believes that the negative experiences will help her in her preparation for next year.
Rani thought about her journey to the Paris Olympics 2024, thinking about the good and bad times. She started trying to qualify in 2008 when she was very young. Back then, she didn’t understand why some of the older athletes were crying when they lost. But now she knows that it’s because they may not get another chance. In 2012, she lost again and felt very alone with no support. But in 2016, she qualified and even though she finished last, it was a much better experience. After the Tokyo Olympics, where the Indian team just missed out on a medal, Rani feels like they can compete with other countries.
Bhagat hopes that para-shuttlers continue to get the same support and praise. After the 2020 Paralympics, the media started paying more attention to para-athletes. Things are changing, and people trust them to do well now. They are going to work hard to double their medal count of 19 from the last Paralympics.
