Mumbai Indians have named a new coaching team for IPL 2027. The group has a familiar feel. Three former players are coming back in new roles. The team also added a coach with international experience.
Mitchell McClenaghan will run the bowling department. He is a left-arm pacer from New Zealand. He played for MI from 2015 to 2020. He was part of four title-winning seasons in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He is known for his aggressive style and competitive nature. He will bring his T20 experience to the bowlers.
Robin Uthappa is the new batting coach. He played for MI in 2008. He was also part of India’s winning squad at the first T20 World Cup in 2007. He has played a lot of cricket in India and in franchise leagues. His job will be to strengthen the batting unit. He will also help with tactical decisions and help players adjust to how T20 cricket keeps changing.
T Dilip joins as fielding coach. He worked with the Indian men’s team before this. He was part of the coaching setup when India won the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups. He was also there for the 2025 Champions Trophy win. He is well known for his work on fielding. He will focus on athleticism, preparation and consistency in the field.
Dhawal Kulkarni is the new development bowling coach. He is another former Mumbai player. He won two IPL titles with the team in 2013 and 2020. He played for the franchise in two spells, from 2008 to 2013 and from 2020 to 2021. He knows Indian conditions well and has strong ties to Mumbai cricket. He will be involved all year in the performance programme. That will help keep player development steady and make the talent pool stronger.
All four will work under head coach Kieron Pollard. Pollard has been with the MI for 16 years. That gives the group a sense of continuity. The setup mixes familiar faces with international experience.
New Zealand Fast Bowler Returns to Mumbai Indians as IPL 2027 Bowling Coach
Mitchell McClenaghan is a former New Zealand fast bowler. He played for MI in the IPL and is now their bowling coach.
McClenaghan made his IPL debut in 2015. Mumbai Indians bought him that year. He took 14 wickets in 10 games at an average of 22.50. He stayed with the team for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He went unsold in the 2018 auction. But MI brought him back as a replacement for the injured Jason Behrendorff. In September 2018, he joined Nangarhar for the first Afghanistan Premier League.
McClenaghan made his T20I debut for New Zealand on December 21, 2012, against South Africa. He took his first wicket in that match, dismissing Richard Levi. His figures were 1/20 from three overs. He played all three T20Is in that series and took 4 wickets in total.
He made his ODI debut on the same tour, on January 19, 2013, against South Africa. He had great figures of 4/20 from ten overs. That was the best bowling by a New Zealand debutant. He became only the second New Zealander after Dayle Hadlee to take four wickets on an ODI debut. He played all three ODIs in that series and took 6 wickets. He was the joint highest wicket-taker for New Zealand in that series, along with Kane Williamson.
On October 24, 2014, McClenaghan became the fastest New Zealander to reach 50 ODI wickets. He got there in his 23rd match, dismissing Quinton de Kock against South Africa. He was also joint second fastest of all time in terms of matches.
In August 2017, McClenaghan gave up his New Zealand contract. He wanted to play in overseas T20 leagues. He was still eligible to play for New Zealand whenever he was available. Lockie Ferguson replaced him on New Zealand’s central contract list.
