Southern Brave are a professional men’s and women’s cricket franchise competing in The Hundred, England’s 100-ball cricket competition. Based at Utilita Bowl in Southampton, the team has been part of the tournament since its first season in 2021 and has established itself as one of the competition’s recognised franchises.

The men’s team won the inaugural Hundred title in 2021, beating Birmingham Phoenix in the final, while the women’s side claimed its first championship in 2023 by defeating Northern Superchargers. The franchise has reached several other finals and playoff matches, giving both teams opportunities to compete for silverware during the competition’s early years.

The Brave continued competing in both tournaments in 2026, finishing sixth in the men’s competition and third in the women’s standings. The women’s team reached the Eliminator but lost to Sunrisers Leeds, ending its campaign before the final.

What Is Southern Brave?

The Brave are one of the eight original franchises created for The Hundred, which began in 2021. The franchise operates separate men’s and women’s teams, allowing it to compete in both competitions under the same name and represent the Hampshire area.

The team plays its home matches at Utilita Bowl, the home of Hampshire Cricket. Its location in Southampton gives local supporters the opportunity to watch domestic and international cricketers compete in the short-format tournament.

The Brave also has links to the Indian Premier League through its ownership structure. Hampshire County Cricket Club holds a 51% stake in the franchise, while GMR Group, co-owner of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, acquired the remaining 49% stake in 2025.

History of Southern Brave

The Brave began competing in The Hundred in 2021, when the tournament introduced its new 100-ball format. The franchise made an immediate impact in the men’s competition, reaching the final and defeating Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs to become the first men’s Hundred champions.

In the women’s competition, Brave also reached the inaugural final in 2021 but lost to Oval Invincibles by 48 runs. The team remained competitive over the following seasons, reaching the final again in 2022 before winning the championship in 2023.

The men’s side continued to reach the later stages of the competition, finishing as runners-up in 2024 after losing to Oval Invincibles in the final. The women’s team also reached the final in 2025, but Northern Superchargers won the title that year.

In 2026, the men’s team finished sixth and missed the playoffs. The women had a stronger campaign, ending the league stage in third place before losing to Sunrisers Leeds in the Eliminator.

The women’s team finally lifted the trophy in 2023 after losing the previous two finals. The Brave scored 139/6 in the final, with Danni Wyatt making 59, before bowling Northern Superchargers out for 105 to secure a 34-run victory.

Southern Brave Men’s Team

The Brave’s men’s team has featured a mix of England internationals and overseas players throughout its time in The Hundred. The franchise’s inaugural championship squad included players such as James Vince, Paul Stirling, Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills.

Paul Stirling made 61 runs in the 2021 final, while Ross Whiteley contributed an unbeaten 44 from 19 balls to help the Brave post a challenging total against Birmingham Phoenix. The team then defended its score to secure the first men’s Hundred trophy.

Southern Brave Men’s Captain and Coach

For the 2026 season, Chris Jordan was appointed men’s captain, while Hemang Badani took charge as head coach. Jordan has been associated with the franchise since the competition began and brings extensive experience in limited-overs cricket.

The men’s coaching group also included Ian Bell as assistant coach, Shane Burger overseeing the bowling programme, Mohit Sharma supporting the bowling unit and John Mooney working as fielding coach.

Southern Brave Men’s Squad for 2026

The Brave confirmed the following men’s squad for the 2026 edition of The Hundred:

  • Chris Jordan (captain)
  • Tom Abell
  • Jofra Archer
  • Nikhil Chaudhary
  • Caleb Falconer
  • Ben McKinney
  • David Miller
  • Michael Pepper
  • Adil Rashid
  • Thomas Rew
  • Jamie Smith
  • Marcus Stoinis
  • Tristan Stubbs
  • Luke Wood
  • Danny Worrall
  • Manny Lumsden
  • Saif Zaib

The squad combined England internationals and experienced T20 players with overseas batters and all-rounders. Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Chris Jordan provided international bowling experience, while Marcus Stoinis, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs offered options in the batting and all-round departments.

The Brave finished sixth in the 2026 men’s competition and therefore did not qualify for the playoffs. One of their notable late-season results came against Trent Rockets, whom they beat by six wickets after Tristan Stubbs scored an unbeaten 52 and Marcus Stoinis made 46.

Southern Brave Women’s Team

The Brave’s women’s team has been among the competitive sides in The Hundred since the tournament began. The franchise reached the first two finals in 2021 and 2022 before winning its maiden title in 2023.

The 2023 championship was built around strong batting and disciplined bowling. Danni Wyatt scored 59 in the final, while Freya Kemp added 31 from 17 balls. Lauren Bell and Kalea Moore then took three wickets each as Northern Superchargers were dismissed for 105.

Southern Brave Women’s Captain and Coach

Australian all-rounder Sophie Molineux captained the women’s team in 2026, with Jonathan Batty serving as head coach. Anya Shrubsole was appointed assistant coach, while Tharindu Perera worked on batting and former England international Jenny Gunn took responsibility for fielding.

Southern Brave Women’s Squad for 2026

The franchise’s 2026 women’s squad included:

  • Sophie Molineux (captain)
  • Ellie Anderson
  • Lauren Bell
  • Maia Bouchier
  • Tilly Corteen-Coleman
  • Phoebe Franklin
  • Daisy Gibb
  • Sarah Glenn
  • Jodi Grewcock
  • Lizelle Lee
  • Bex Odgers
  • Jemimah Rodrigues
  • Laura Wolvaardt
  • Issy Wong
  • Naomi Dattani
  • Katherine Fraser

The squad featured a blend of English domestic players and international stars. Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues added batting quality, while Lauren Bell, Issy Wong and Sarah Glenn offered pace and spin options. Lizelle Lee also provided experience at the top of the order.

The Brave’s women finished third in the 2026 league stage and advanced to the Eliminator. They scored 114/7 against Sunrisers Leeds, but their opponents completed the chase to win by five wickets and end Brave’s title hopes.

Southern Brave Format in The Hundred

The Hundred uses a 100-ball format, with each team facing a maximum of 100 legal deliveries in an innings. Unlike traditional T20 cricket, which has 120 legal balls per side, The Hundred is designed around shorter innings and a different set of bowling rules.

Each team has ten balls per over, and a bowler can deliver either five or ten consecutive balls before the next bowler takes over. The competition features a league stage followed by playoffs, with the top teams advancing towards the final.

The Brave compete in separate men’s and women’s tournaments, each with its own league table, fixtures and championship. The team plays at Utilita Bowl during home fixtures and travels to other Hundred venues for away matches.

Southern Brave Home Ground

Utilita Bowl is the home ground of the Brave and Hampshire County Cricket Club. Located in the Southampton area, the venue hosts domestic cricket, international fixtures and the franchise’s home matches in The Hundred.

The ground provides the team with a regular home base for both men’s and women’s games. The Brave’s supporters can watch the two squads compete at the same venue during the tournament, while visiting teams travel to Southampton for their scheduled fixtures.

Southern Brave Records

First Men’s Hundred Champions

The Brave won the inaugural men’s Hundred title in 2021, beating Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs at Lord’s. The team scored 168/5, with Paul Stirling making 61 and Ross Whiteley finishing unbeaten on 44.

First Women’s Title in 2023

The women’s side won its first Hundred championship in 2023, beating Northern Superchargers by 34 runs. Danni Wyatt’s 59 and three-wicket spells from Lauren Bell and Kalea Moore helped secure the trophy.

Multiple Women’s Final Appearances

The Brave’s women reached the final in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025. They won in 2023 and finished runners-up in the other three finals, demonstrating their ability to reach the closing stages of the competition.

Men’s Runners-up in 2024

The Brave reached the men’s final again in 2024 but lost to Oval Invincibles by 17 runs. The result gave the franchise its second men’s final appearance, following its title-winning campaign in 2021.

2026 Season Results

In 2026, the men’s team finished sixth and the women’s team finished third. The women qualified for the Eliminator, while the men ended their campaign during the league stage.
