On a historically dismal day for Indian cricket, the men’s national team was beaten by Ireland in the second and final T20I between the two teams. Meanwhile, Australia defeated the women’s team in the virtual quarterfinal of the 2026 Women’s World Cup.
This defeat against Ireland, as embarrassing as it is for the defending T20 World Champions, is so much worse than just a loss to a worse-ranked team in a 40-over contest.
Today, we will look at several unwanted records broken and ‘first-evers’ achieved by the Indian cricket team in this series defeat to the Irish.
India Unwanted Records Against Ireland
First up, the obvious. A couple of days ago, when the Men in Blue lost the first match of this two-game India vs Ireland series, it was their first-ever defeat to Ireland in a T20I. And with today’s loss, they have lost a series to Ireland, in any format, for the first time.
That first loss a couple of days ago brought out too many unwanted records for India. First, Shreyas Iyer became only the fourth Indian captain to lose his first T20I while leading the team, joining Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant in this list.
More embarrassingly, Iyer set the record for the lowest score by a debut captain in a T20I for India, scoring just three runs in the first T20 against Ireland. Shreyas also became the first Indian captain to lose a game to Ireland, in any format. Before the first game, India had a perfect record in eight T20Is and three ODIs against the Irish.
In the same game, Prasidh Krishna put up the worst figures by an Indian against Ireland, conceding 57 runs in four overs with no wickets. He also bowled the most expensive over by an Indian against Ireland in that game, giving away 27 runs in the 17th over of the first innings.
India then compounded their struggles with a one-run defeat in the second match of this series. This resulted in the defending T20 World Champions losing the series 2-0. Naturally, this is India’s first series loss to Ireland in any format and also their first washout.
While chasing a target of 155 runs in the second match, both Indian openers got out for a duck. This is only the third time this has happened to India in a T20I. The first time it happened was in 2016, when Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane were dismissed after making no runs. Then, in 2023, against South Africa, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal got out for a duck in a game.
However, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma both got out for a golden duck today, something that has never happened to both Indian openers in a T20I.
Shreyas Iyer’s first series as the Indian T20 captain went from bad to worse with this defeat. He became the second Indian captain, after Sikhar Dhawan, to lose his debut captaincy in a T20I series. And while Dhawan’s loss in 2021 against Sri Lanka came with a second-string Indian team, which was further gutted by a COVID-19 outbreak, Iyer lost to Ireland with much of the first-choice team that won the 2026 T20 World Cup.
This series loss to Ireland also marks India’s series loss against the lowest-ranked international team. The Irish men’s side currently ranks 11th in T20Is. The Men in Blue have never lost a series to a team ranked this low in international cricket.
The defeat in this India vs Ireland innings, while not a sign of things to come (presumably), is still a dark day for Indian cricket, seeing that it is also only the third time ever.
