For the first time since the two teams competed against each other in 2009, Ireland have beaten India in a T20I, ending a streak of eight defeats in a row.
Shreyas Iyer’s T20I captaincy era began on a questionable note as India went down by 34 runs in Belfast on Friday.
Ireland’s debutant fast bowler Matthew Hollard bagged the Player of the Match award for his 3/28, while captain Lorcan Tucker’s 50 (36) was crucial in Ireland posting an above-par total.
For India, who didn’t give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi an impending debut cap, Harshit Rana picked up 3/24 on his comeback to professional cricket after four months, and Abhishek Sharma clattered a 19-ball fifty. However, their efforts went in vain as India were bowled out for 148 in the chase of 183.

India didn’t adapt to conditions and boundary dimensions
Coming from the summer in India, the Indian players, having arrived in batches on June 23 and 24, didn’t get enough time to acclimatize to the conditions in Ireland.
Further, it seems that the Indians also didn’t fully grasp the difference in the boundary size dimensions at the Civil Service Cricket Club ground. The side boundaries were markedly larger than the straight boundaries, something the Irish batters and bowlers used to good effect.
Ireland scored 23 runs more down the ground in the ‘V’ than the Indian batsmen. India started off well with the ball, hitting hard and short lengths, and had Ireland in a pickle at 51/4. However, they digressed from that plan in the middle overs and conceded the amount of runs that proved to be the difference.
On the other hand, several Indian batsmen got out caught in the deep and while playing cross-batted shots. Only Shivam Dube seemed to have assessed the effective plan at this venue as he smoked two sixes down the ground, but he perished under the required run rate pressure.
“In between, we lost execution. We made them hit straight down the ground where we know that the dimensions are pretty small,” Iyer said after the loss.
To make matters worse for themselves, India dropped three catches of Delany and Tucker, Ireland’s top-two scorers of the game.
Did the batters fail to come out of IPL zone?
Adding on to the previous point, it felt that the Indian batsmen were still not completely out of the IPL shell, where they had played for over two months on flat pitches with the Impact Player emboldening their already fearless mindset.
While in the IPL 2026, the average innings score was close to 198, in the IND vs IRE 1st T20I, the pitch had some bounce in it but the track was slow, and the side boundary was larger than on Indian grounds. 160 was considered a par score. Barring Abhishek, none of the Indian batters settled on this pitch and kept losing their wickets while swinging for the fences.
Questions over usage of Sundar
Throughout Gautam Gambhir’s head coach tenure, it has appeared that he wants Washington Sundar as a key player across the three formats.
But Gambhir has failed to utilize either of Sundar’s batting or bowling skillsets and strengths in any of the formats, making everyone question whether Sundar actually adds value to the T20I team and simply gets chances because he is an all-rounder.
In a shocking move from Iyer, he introduced Sundar in the 16th over of Ireland’s innings with two right-handers at the crease while dumping Dube from the attack, who had figures of 1/18 in 3 overs and bowled the perfect lengths for this pitch and ground. Sundar was duly clobbered for 19 runs in his only over of the match.
Then, during India’s chase, Sundar was promoted to No. 6, ahead of both Axar and Dube. Sundar derailed India’s innings with his innings of 9 runs off 12 balls.
