The Mumbai Indians rose to seventh from the bottom of the points table with a victory over the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026. But why did GT lose to MI?
Today’s game was Match 30 of IPL 2026. It was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with the home team winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. The Indians lost wickets early. But the middle-order duo of Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma stabilised the innings. In the death overs, Tilak went berserk and went on to score a century in 45 balls, taking Mumbai’s total to 1995 in 20 overs.
In response, the Titans faltered early. Lost early wickets and kept on losing wickets. None of their batters scored big tonight. At the end, they would get all out for 100 runs in just under 16 overs.
Here, we will discuss the three reasons why Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Titans in this game of IPL 2026.
Why Mumbai Indians Beat Gujarat Titans
1) Tilak Varma Saves The Day
Another day, another century for a Mumbai Indians player. After Quinton de Kock’s ton in MI’s last game, Tilak Varma scored a 100 in tonight’s game. He not only scored a quickfire hundred, but also saved his team with that innings.
The Indians did not get off to a good start in this match. Alongside de Kock, debutant Danish Malewar opened the innings for Mumbai today. The debutant did not have a good outing today, being dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the second over for two off four after being caught before the wickets.
The South African opener too is beaten by Rabada’s pace in the fourth over, getting out for 13 off 11. And before the end of the powerplay, Suryakumar Yadav became Rabada’s third wicket of the night, being dismissed for 15 off 10. At the sixth over mark, the MI score was 46/3.
The upcoming partnership between Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir would be crucial for Mumbai. The two batted for about seven overs together and made 52 runs. Dhir took charge during this partnership, making 45 off 32 and ensuring that this inning was stable. At this point, Tilak was playing at 16 out of 18. But this wicket would allow him to unleash his full potential.
At the 16th over mark, Varma was batting at 37 off 28. What followed was one of the finest moments in the IPL this season.
15 runs came in the 17th over, then 26 came in the 18th. Tilak Varma reached his half-century in 33 deliveries in the 18th over, and before the end of the over, he raced up to 75 off 38.
With some insane shots in the final two overs, Tilak, unbelievably, reached the 100-run mark on the last ball of the MI innings, ending his stint on the crease at 101 off 45. He reached the milestone with a six on the last ball. This also brought the Mumbai Indians to a respectable total of 199/5 in 20 overs.
2) GT Losing Regular Wickets
To chase a 200-run target, a team needs to keep wickets on their side, while at least one batter needs to make a decent score. None of that happened for the Gujarat Titans.
They lost their first wicket on the first ball of their innings, as Jasprit Bumrah found his first wicket this season with a golden duck dismissal of Sai Sudharsan. Jos Buttler was out for five off six in the very next over, an over where 18 runs were made. Then, in the fifth over, captain Shubman Gill returned to the pavilion for 14 off 13.
Three wickets in the powerplay spelt trouble for the Titans. And they would lose a few more soon after. In the eighth over, Mitchell Santner dismissed Washington Sundar, who was looking in good colour for 26 off 17. Then, later in that over, Glenn Phillips departed for six off eight.
At 55/5 at the end of the eighth over. This chase looked dead and buried unless the lower-middle order was to pull off a miracle. However, that would not happen.
Rahul Tewatia made eight off 11 before getting out, while Shahrukh Khan had another disappointing outing with 17 off 13. Rashid Khan just made four runs in six balls before his wicket, while Kagiso Rabada showed some spirit towards the end with his 12 off 14. Ashok Sharma made one run, and Mohammed Siraj was dismissed for a duck.
And just like that, Gujarat was all out for an even 100 in 15.5 overs. Not only did they fail to keep their wickets, but none of their batters made a half-decent score. Washington Sundar was the team’s highest run scorer on the night with 26.
3) MI’s Bowling Wins The Game
While TilakVarma carried the Mumbai Indians to a solid score on his own, it was Mumbai’s bowling that won them the game tonight.
First up, Jasprit Bumrah. The best pace bowler in the world had not taken a single wicket in IPL 2026 so far. He would not need to search deep for one tonight, as he got a wicket on the first ball of the first over of the second inning, as Sai Sudharsan got out for a golden duck, having been caught at cover point.
Bumrah would have a solid outing altogether in this game. The star-pacer bowled three overs tonight, got a wicket, and conceded just 15 runs at an economy of five.
Skipper Hardik Pandya was the only miss in the MI bowling attack tonight. He bowled only one over, the second one in the innings. While he did take a wicket on the second ball, dismissing Jos Buttler, Washington Sundar ensured that this over would go for 18 runs.
In Hardik’s place, debutant pacer Krish Bhagat was brought into the attack. The 21-year-old would bowl two overs tonight. While he did not take any wickets, he gave away only 10 runs and showed some fine control over his lines.
The spin duo of Allah Ghazanfar and Mitchell Santner had a great time with the ball today. In his first two overs, Ghazanfar bowled economically. He then came in to bowl the 16th over, which would be the match’s last. There, he took two lower-order wickets to end the night with the figures of 2/17 in 2.5 overs.
Meanwhile, Santner bowled three overs in this game. He came into the attack in the eighth over and immediately took two wickets. First, he got rid of a dangerous-looking Sundar before scalping the ever-lethal Glenn Phillips. His three-over spell would produce 2/16 figures. His economy tonight was 5.33.
Finally, we come to Ashwani Kumar. The pace bowler was the star of MI’s bowling attack tonight. He came into the attack in the fifth over of the innings and took the massive wicket of Shubman Gill in his first over.
He would return to bowling in the 11th over and took the wicket of Rahul Tewatia. Then, in the 13th over. He took the wickets of Rashid Khan and Shahrukh Khan, ending his four-over spell on the night for 4/24, conceding runs with a solid economy of six.
However, despite Ashwani’s dream performance, it was Tilak Varma who was named the Player of the Match for his scintillating century. With this win, the Mumbai Indians rose to seventh on the points table. After a four-match losing streak, the five-time champions won their second game of the season.
On the other hand, the Gujarat Titans currently sit at sixth in the league with three wins and three losses in six games.
