Australia are officially out of the T20 World Cup after the group stage. The 2021 champions were hoping for some help from other teams, but the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland at Pallekele International Stadium was abandoned due to rain. Ireland needed to beat Zimbabwe for Australia to stay in the tournament, but the washout meant Australia’s chances ended immediately.
This is only the second time Australia has been eliminated in the group stage, the first being in 2009 when they lost to West Indies and Sri Lanka. Their 2026 campaign was shaky from the start, with key bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood out injured, and captain Mitchell Marsh missing the first two matches because of an injury scare.
Travis Head led the side in Marsh’s absence and Australia started well with a win over Ireland. But things went downhill after a 23-run loss to Zimbabwe, led by Sikandar Raza. After that, they had no room for mistakes against Sri Lanka and couldn’t recover. Australia collapsed from 104/0 to 181 all out in 20 overs against them. Pathum Nissanka then hit an unbeaten century to guide Sri Lanka to an easy win with eight wickets in hand and 12 balls to spare.
Australia’s fate depended on Zimbabwe’s result after that, and only an Ireland win could have kept them alive. Even then, they would have needed big wins over Oman and for Sri Lanka to lose to Zimbabwe, but the rain ended all possibilities.
With Australia out, Zimbabwe took their place in the Super 8s, joining India, South Africa, and the West Indies. Zimbabwe will face India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on February 26. Reaching the Super 8s also guarantees Zimbabwe a spot in the next T20 World Cup in 2028 in Australia and New Zealand, a huge turnaround for a team that had lost to Uganda and failed to qualify for 2024.
Australia Misses Third Consecutive T20 World Cup Semi-Finals After 2026 Knockout
Australia has hit a new low in the T20 World Cup by missing out on the semi-finals for the third straight time. After winning the title in 2021, they were knocked out in the Super 12 stage in 2022 after losing their opening match to New Zealand, and in 2024, their campaign ended in the Super Eight stage after losing to Afghanistan for the first time and later to eventual champions India.
This is the first time in 51 years, since the first men’s senior ICC tournament in 1975, that Australia has failed to reach the semi-finals in three consecutive events, and it is the sixth time in 10 editions that they have missed the last four in the T20 World Cup.
This is only the second time Australia has failed to make a Super 6/8/12 or quarter-final stage, the first being the 2009 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, when they lost both group games to Sri Lanka and the West Indies. In the T20 World Cups of 2016 and 2022, top-ranked teams got a bye to the Super 12 phase, so Australia didn’t play in the initial group stage then either.
