India’s preparations for the second Test against South Africa absorbed another disruption on Friday with Shubman Gill formally ruled out due to the neck injury sustained in Kolkata. The BCCI confirmed that Gill, who briefly travelled with the squad to Guwahati, will now return to Mumbai for further medical evaluation.
Rishabh Pant, who stepped in mid-match at Eden Gardens after Gill retired hurt, will lead India from the outset in the Test beginning Saturday.
Medical advice has remained consistent: any premature return risks triggering another spasm, the same ailment that forced Gill out of a Test in 2024. His absence may also complicate selection for the ODI series that follows later this month.
India, meanwhile, must pick a replacement from a limited pool: B Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal or Nitish Kumar Reddy. All three were part of the squad in Kolkata; none has yet been blooded in Gill’s current role.
Gill’s injury truncated his Kolkata Test to three deliveries. India were subsequently bowled out for 93 in a chase of 124, a defeat sharpened by the captain’s absence and a surface that veered between capricious bounce and outright treachery.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, speaking prior to the final medical call, was matter-of-fact: India would not risk their captain unless completely convinced the issue would not recur. As it transpired, the risk proved intolerable.
Pant’s elevation arrives with little ceremony but considerable responsibility. India trail 1-0, the middle order remains unsettled, and the Guwahati pitch is, as ever, an object of speculation rather than assurance.
Gill’s recovery will continue elsewhere. India’s recovery must begin immediately.
IND vs SA 2nd Test: Will Rishabh Pant Give India A Win?
What is certain is that India, unsettled by a loss that exposed both their fragility and their over-reliance on Gill, now enter Guwahati not only without their captain but without the clarity that comes from form or continuity. Pant’s stewardship arrives sooner than expected; whether it steadies India will be known soon enough.
