History accrues slowly in Bangladesh cricket, but on a humid morning in Dhaka it acquired a notable addition. Mushfiqur Rahim, the side’s most durable craftsman, marked his 100th Test with a century, an achievement so uncommon that it has been managed by barely a handful across 147 years of Test history.
Rahim’s 106 against Ireland was not flamboyant, nor did it seek to be. Across 214 balls, he practised the careful accumulation that has become his signature, five boundaries, judicious rotation, and a serenity missing from his younger colleagues. It was enough to steer Bangladesh to command in the second Test and enough, too, to earn him entry into one of cricket’s quieter clubs.
That club began with England’s Colin Cowdrey in 1968, and over the decades has admitted Javed Miandad, Gordon Greenidge, Alec Stewart, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Joe Root, David Warner, and now Rahim. Only Ricky Ponting, irrepressible as ever, reached the summit twice in the same match, peeling off 120 and 143* against South Africa in Sydney in 2006.
Batters with a Century in The 100th Test
| Batter | Country | Score(s) |
| Colin Cowdrey | England | 104 |
| Javed Miandad | Pakistan | 145 |
| Gordon Greenidge | West Indies | 149 |
| Alec Stewart | England | 105 |
| Inzamam-ul-Haq | Pakistan | 184 |
| Ricky Ponting | Australia | 120 & 143* |
| Graeme Smith | South Africa | 131 |
| Hashim Amla | South Africa | 134 |
| Joe Root | England | 218 |
| David Warner | Australia | 200 |
| Mushfiqur Rahim | Bangladesh | 106 |
For Bangladesh, the moment bore double resonance. Rahim is their first to 100 Tests, a milestone reflecting a stubborn fidelity to the longest format, and now the only one among them with a century in the fixture.
Bangladesh had chosen to bat and ended the opening day on 292 for 4, Rahim becalmed on 99. He raised three figures early on the second morning, the 13th Test ton of a career built on quiet perseverance rather than spectacle. With a 1–0 lead after an innings victory in Sylhet, his contribution leaves the hosts well placed for a series sweep.
