The first-ever One-Day International (ODI) match was played between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in January 1971. In that match, England’s John Edrich scored 82 runs, becoming the first player to record a half-century in ODIs. The following year, Dennis Amiss of England scored the first ODI century with 103 runs against Australia at Old Trafford on 24 August 1972.
For many years, no player managed to reach a double century in ODIs. The record for the highest score stood at 194, made by Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar against India in 1997 at Chennai. Later that same year, Australian women’s cricketer Belinda Clark became the first player to score a double century in ODIs, making an unbeaten 229 against Denmark in the 1997 Women’s World Cup at Mumbai. Her record stood for 17 years until India’s Rohit Sharma surpassed it on 13 November 2014 with a record-breaking 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
List of Batsmen with the Most 200s in ODI Cricket
Rohit Sharma (India) – 3 Double Centuries
Rohit Sharma is the only cricketer in history to have scored three double centuries in One Day Internationals (ODIs). His first came in 2013 against Australia at Bengaluru, where he made 209. He reached fifty off 71 balls before attacking in the second half, hitting 16 sixes, the most by an Indian in an ODI innings at the time.
In 2014, Rohit set a world record with 264 runs against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It remains the highest individual score in ODI history. His early overs were steady, but he accelerated sharply later, bringing up successive fifties in 28, 25, 26, and 15 balls.
His third double century came in 2017 against Sri Lanka at Mohali, where he scored an unbeaten 208*. After fifty off 65 balls, he added his next hundred in only 36 deliveries, scoring 100 runs in the final 10 overs. This made him the first player to record three double hundreds in ODIs.
Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 1 Double Century
Martin Guptill became the first New Zealand batsman and the fifth player overall to score a double century in One-Day Internationals when he struck an unbeaten 237 against the West Indies in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final at Wellington. His innings, made from 163 balls, included 24 fours and 11 sixes. Guptill surpassed Chris Gayle’s 215 to record the highest individual score in World Cup history.
After New Zealand lost Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson early, Guptill steadied the innings with a 143-run stand alongside Ross Taylor. He reached his fifty in 64 balls and century in 111 before accelerating rapidly, taking just 41 more balls for his next hundred. His explosive batting helped New Zealand post 393 for six in 50 overs.
Virender Sehwag (India) – 1 Double Century
On December 8, 2011, Virender Sehwag, captaining India, created history by scoring a record-breaking 219 runs against the West Indies in the fourth ODI at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. His innings came off just 149 balls, decorated with 25 fours and seven sixes, making it the highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket at the time. Sehwag surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 200* scored against South Africa in 2010. He was eventually dismissed by Kieron Pollard in the 47th over, but not before setting a monumental record.
Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 1 Double Century
On February 24, 2015, Chris Gayle became the first player to score a double century in Cricket World Cup history. Playing for the West Indies against Zimbabwe in a Pool B match, the 35-year-old left-hander scored 215 runs from 147 balls, hitting 16 sixes and 10 fours. He reached 200 off 138 deliveries, smashing Tendai Chatara for a boundary in the 46th over. Gayle’s innings surpassed Gary Kirsten’s 188* against the UAE in 1996 and was the first ODI double hundred by a non-Indian batsman.
Gayle’s innings began with fortune as he survived an lbw review on the first ball. He reached his first hundred in 105 balls and accelerated to his second in only 33. He was dismissed off the final ball of the innings, top-edging a catch to midwicket. The West Indies posted 372-2, and Gayle later took two wickets and a catch as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 289, giving the West Indies a 73-run victory under the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan) – 1 Double Century
Fakhar Zaman became the first Pakistani batsman to score a double century in One Day Internationals, on July 20, 2018, at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. He reached this milestone while still undefeated at 210 runs in the fourth ODI against Zimbabwe. With the help of Zaman’s innings, Pakistan achieved their highest-ever ODI total of 399/1, surpassing their previous best of 385/7 against Bangladesh in 2010.
Fakhar and Imam-ul-Haq opened with 304 runs for the first wicket, the highest opening partnership in ODI history. This partnership surpassed the previous record of 286 runs set by Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga in 2006. With this innings, Zaman became the sixth player in ODI history to reach a double hundred and the first from Pakistan. It was also his second century of the series.
