The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a men’s professional wrestling title owned by WWE and currently defended on the Raw brand. It was created in 1979 in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The inaugural champion was Pat Patterson, who was said to have unified the North American and South American Championships after a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It is regarded as the second most prestigious championship in WWE after the WWE Championship and is the third-oldest active title in the company, following the WWE Championship (1963) and the United States Championship (1975). After the WWF rebranded to WWE in 2002, the title was renamed accordingly.
There have been 188 reigns shared by 92 champions. Chris Jericho holds the record for the most reigns with nine. The current champion is Dominik Mysterio, who is in his first reign after winning the title by pinning Finn Bálor in a fatal four-way match against Bron Breakker, Penta, and Bálor on Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 on April 20, 2025, in Paradise, Nevada.
