Shubman Gill Slams England Openers: “Lot of people have been talking about it. So let me just clear the air for once and for all.” On the eve of the IND vs ENG fourth Test in Manchester, India captain Shubman Gill didn’t mince any words as he went on a monologue against England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley for their apparent time-wasting antics on day 3 of the third Test, which was played at Lord’s.
Gill invoked the Spirit of the Game and accused the England openers of coming “90 seconds” later to the pitch than they were scheduled to.
It took some time-wasting tactics from England and Crawley in particular to fire up the Indian players, with the likes of Gill and Mohammed Siraj being the most verbal ones, with the Indian skipper suggesting Crawley “grow some f***ing balls” when the right-handed England opener ensured that India didn’t bowl more than just one over in the dying minutes of the third day of the third Test at Lord’s.
Crawley twice stopped Bumrah in his run-up, and then when he was struck on the glove, he called for the medical staff member, further delaying the resumption of the game. This triggers Gill and the other Indian players who went after Crawley. Both Gill and Crawley had a showdown in which they pointed fingers at each other.
That exchange paved the way for more drama and intense moments between the players of both teams in the final two days of the Lord’s Test, which England won by 22 runs in what turned out to be a thrilling Test match.

While the chatter around this topic seemed to have died down as attention turned towards Manchester, where the 4th Test will begin on Wednesday, Shubman Gill, in his pre-match press conference, gave a lengthy view on England’s ploy of wasting time and denying India another over.
Gill said, “The English batsmen on that day, they had seven minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20, 90 seconds late. Yes, most of the teams, they use this. Even if we were in a position, we would have also liked to play lesser overs.”
“But there’s a manner to do it. And we felt, yes, if you get hit on your body, the physios are allowed to come on. And that is something that is fair. But to be able to come 90 seconds late on the crease is not something that I would think comes in the spirit of the game. And just leading up to that event, a lot of things that we thought should not have happened, it had happened. And it’s not, I wouldn’t say it was something that I’m very proud of.”
“But there was a lead-up and build-up to that. It didn’t just come out of nowhere. And we had no intention of doing that whatsoever.”
It would be interesting to see what reply the England camp will offer to Gill’s accusation.
Meanwhile, India are set to make at least two changes to their side, as Nitish Reddy is ruled out of the series and Akash Deep from the 4th Test due to injuries. Uncapped Haryana fast bowler Anshul Kamboj, who was added to the squad after the Lord’s Test, could make his Test debut in Manchester. Shardul Thakur could also return to the side.
Jasprit Bumrah is set to play in Manchester and then might be rested from the fifth Test. A key positive for India is that Rishabh Pant, who was hit on his finger at Lord’s, is likely to don the wicketkeeping gloves in Manchester.
