“We all have to defend, the 11 players on the field have to be involved,” Alonso said. “They have to see how we want to press, we’re all involved, Vini, Jude [Bellingham], Fede [Valverde], Kylian.”
The remarks serve as a public warning to some of Madrid’s most high-profile players, particularly Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior, both of whom came under similar scrutiny last season under Carlo Ancelotti. The implication is unmistakable: marquee status must come with hard running.
“The defence has to push up, the tighter we are with the spaces [between us], the better,” Alonso added. “We have to improve that. We’re working on it, and Vini too.”
Vinicius Junior was explicitly named in Alonso’s assessment of what still needs attention. While the Brazilian forward is central to Madrid’s attacking flair, his role out of possession is under review.
Mbappé Still Short of Full Fitness
Alonso also commented on Mbappé’s physical condition, revealing that the French forward is not yet ready to return, though he has resumed light training.
“I was happy to see him on the pitch; it was his first day back in boots,” Alonso said. “He still has a slight weakness that prevents him from playing at the competitive level we need.”
Mbappé, who was left out of the squad for the Pachuca match, is expected to be preserved for the knockout rounds, should Madrid advance. “We discussed it after training. We would prefer him to be fit if we advance to the next phase,” Alonso confirmed.
Rodrygo Situation Clarified
Rodrygo’s omission from the win over Pachuca led to speculation about his standing, but Alonso downplayed any deeper implications.
“He looks good, enthusiastic,” he said. “The other day was a technical decision but he’s still important. He’s a special player.”
Asked whether the Brazilian forward could be sold if necessary, Alonso kept his cards close but offered a clear stance.
“I am very happy with all of the players and I count on all of them,” he stated. “There are 50 or 60 matches — the season is demanding, and healthy competition is key.”
Focus Firmly on Salzburg – Not on City
Madrid could meet Manchester City in the knockouts depending on Thursday’s result, but Alonso was firm in rejecting the idea of strategic manipulation.
“It isn’t a good idea to think about not winning,” he said. “That isn’t a good message for anyone… I’ve seen the draw, I’m not blind, but we’ll play to win.”
The message was blunt: Real Madrid don’t manage outcomes, they chase victories.

Alonso had words of encouragement for Dean Huijsen, describing the young centre-back as “a pillar of the team,” while stressing that development must continue.
“He demonstrated his personality… He makes himself loved and respected,” Alonso said. “He has room for improvement, so he can’t relax.”
On Brahim Díaz, Alonso was similarly upbeat:
“He’s competitive and understands things very well. In 20 or 30 minutes, he stirs things up… I know I can count on him.”
Alonso also touched on Jude Bellingham’s absence post-surgery, calling him “key” and expressing hopes that the Englishman will return soon “with that clinical finishing touch.”
As for the broader picture, Alonso was impressed with the level of the tournament, citing the competitiveness of South American clubs.
“At first, we thought it would be dominated by the Europeans,” he said, “but it has opened our eyes in general.”
