Who Is The Latest Australian Opener Sam Konstas: Australian Cricket Team has announced that Nathan McSweeney, who made his debut in the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth, will not be a part of the squad for the two remaining matches of the series. He will be replaced by 19-year-old Sam Konstas. But who is he?
Who Is The Latest Australian Opener Sam Konstas?
A part of the Australian U-19 squad for the U-19 World Cup 2024, Konstas had a lot of hype behind him when he made his first-class debut for South Australia in October 2024, just a couple of months ago.
In his debut in the Sheffield Shield, he scored centuries in both innings in his debut, becoming the youngest player to do so since the legendary Ricky Ponting in 1993.
Sam was then picked to be in the Australia A squad, which played two unofficial Test matches against India A right before the Australia vs India Test series, performing well there as well.
Ever since David Warner’s retirement about a year ago, the Kangaroos have been looking for a replacement for the legendary opener. In Test cricket, even Steve Smith tried to move to that opening slot, but to poor returns.
So, before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it seemed that Sam Konstas was a perfect fit, but instead, Nathan McSweeney, who is a middle-order batter, was picked to open alongside Usman Khawaja against India.

Konstas made his Big Bash League debut this season, in December 2024, and is currently playing for the Sydney Thunder. In his debut against the Adelaide Strikers, he played a fabulous knock of 56 off 27 and helped his team chase a target of 183 runs down.
Being in the Australian squad for the two upcoming Tests, if Konstas makes his Test debut against India, he will become the youngest batter to debut for the Australian Cricket Team in 71 years, since Ian Craig in 1953. In terms of all players, he would be the youngest debutant for his country since current captain Pat Cummins did at the age of 18 in 2011.
With the India vs Australia series standing at 1-1, the remaining two Test matches in Melbourne and Sydney will be crucial not only because of the result of this series but also the equation for the World Test Championship final, which will be played in June 2025.
