Where will the Champions Trophy 2025 be played: On December 19th, the ICC made two huge announcements. First, the governing council confirmed that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be hosted in a hybrid model by Pakistan and a neutral country.
Secondly, the ICC also confirmed that the ICC events that are slated to be hosted by India and Pakistan in the 2024-27 cycle will also follow the same hybrid model.
This is a big win for the PCB. They had initially opposed the hybrid model idea for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but accepted it on the condition that the ICC events in India also be hosted in the same manner. India are set to host the 2025 Women’s World Cup and co-host the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka.
The Indian government had earlier denied permission for the team to fly to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Since then, it’s been a fiasco that the ICC had been trying to solve between the PCB and the BCCI.
The neutral venue will host India’s three group-stage matches and the knockouts should they reach it.
In their released statement, the ICC said,
“India and Pakistan matches hosted by either country at ICC Events during the 2024-2027 rights cycle will be played at a neutral venue, the ICC Board confirmed on Thursday, 19 December.
“This will apply to the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 (hosted by Pakistan), set to be played in February and March 2025, as well as the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 (hosted by India) and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 (hosted by India and Sri Lanka).”
Where will the Champions Trophy 2025 be played?
While the ICC hasn’t yet announced the neutral venue to host India’s matches at the ICC Champions Trophy, it is reported by Cricbuzz that the UAE will most likely get to host them. The India vs Pakistan match is likely to be played in Dubai.
Sri Lanka is also another venue in contention to host India’s matches, but the ICC is reportedly tilted towards the UAE.
The eight teams in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, and Pakistan.
Pakistan are the defending champions, having won the last edition in 2017 in England by defeating India in the final.
Further, the ICC also gave the hosting rights of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028 to Pakistan, which will also follow the hybrid model.
