NZvs ENG: Kane Williamson Scores 93 To Take NZ Past 300
The first of three New Zealand vs England Test matches kicked off at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch earlier today. The away team won the toss and decided to bowl first. This looked like the correct decision when Gus Atkinson dismissed opener Devon Conway in the second over, but then in walked Williamson.
The former Kiwi captain did not play a single game in New Zealand’s 3-0 thrashing of India, which was the national team’s first Test series win in India. Instead, his last Test matches were during the 2-0 series loss to Sri Lanka.
Back in the England game, Williamson started forming a fine partnership with captain Tom Latham, as the skipper scored a quickfire 47 off 54 before getting out.
From this point on, it was upon Williamson to steady the inning, which he did. As incoming batters scored quick runs, the veteran batter stood guard on one end of the pitch. First, Rachin Ravindra scored 34 runs, then Daryl Mitchell scored 19. By the time Mitchell got out, the BlackCaps were 199/4, and Kane was on his way to a ton.
But then, in the 60th over of the day, with the team being at 227 and Kane Williamson at 93, Atkinson dismissed him and dealt a massive blow to the New Zealand inning.
As stated earlier, this is Kane’s first 90+ score in his home country in almost six years. The last time he scored a 90 in New Zealand was a 91 against Sri Lanka in Wellington on December 15, 2018.
But even after Williamson got out, the Kiwi inning kept going. Glenn Phillips now took the responsibility to anchor the inning as the team kept losing wicket at one end. At the end of the day’s play, the New Zealand Cricket Team were 319/8 in 83 overs. Phillips is on strike at 41, along with Tim Southee at 10.
While Kane Williamson was New Zealand’s top performer of the day, it was Shoaib Bashir who had the best outing today for England. The spinner took four wickets in 20 overs on the day as he dismissed Rachin Ravindra, Tom Blundell, Nathan Smith, and Matt Henry. Meanwhile, pacers Gus Atkinson and Brydobn Carse took two wickets each.
