Mohammad Nabi Retirement: It has been confirmed that veteran Afghanistan all-rounder and former captain Mohammad Nabi will bid goodbye to ODIs after the Champions Trophy 2025.
The Champions Trophy is slated to be played in February-March next year in Pakistan, which will be the last ODI tournament for Nabi, who was part of Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI match back in 2009.
Nabi has been the biggest constant in Afghanistan cricket since they gained international status. Afghanistan played their first ODI match against Scotland in Benoni in 2009, and Mohammad Nabi was the Man of the Match for his 58 (64) that helped his side win by 89 runs.
Afghanistan have played 170 ODIs till now, and Nabi has been part of 165 of them. He’s been their greatest and most experienced ODI player.
Mohammad Nabi Retirement: Afghanistan Cricket Board Confirms
Afghanistan Cricket Board chief executive Naseeb Khan told Cricbuzz,
“Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy and he informed the board about his desire. He told me few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy and we welcome his decision. After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that, he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now.”
Afghanistan qualified for the Champions Trophy 2025 by finishing sixth in the points table at the ICC World Cup 2023 in India, where they caused a few major upsets by defeating England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan and could have also beaten Australia if not for Glenn Maxwell’s freakish innings on effectively one leg.
So far in his 165-man ODI career, Nabi has scored 3549 runs at an average of 27.30 with two centuries and 17 fifties and picked up 171 wickets with a best of 5/17.
Recently, the 39-year-old Nabi played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s win over Bangladesh in the first ODI match in Sharjah, scoring 84 runs off 79 balls and also taking one wicket.
