Aakash Chopra Comments On Sanju Samson Knock: Former Indian cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra has commented on Sanju Samson’s performance in India’s first T20I against Bangladesh. He says that the wicketkeeper-batter looked good for the time he was there on the pitch but should have batted for longer.
The Indian Cricket Team took on Bangladesh in the first of three T20Is on Sunday, October 6, in the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior. After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, India bowled Bangladesh out for 127 in what was a dominant performance by the bowling unit.
For India, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma came out to bat. After hitting a few good shots, Abhishek was run out in the second over. This saw Samson bat with captain Suryakumar Yadav for a few overs.
While Surya looked to deposit every delivery into the stands, Sanju complimented the skipper by rotating the strike and hitting some beautiful strokes and drives in between. One of the most elegant batters in India, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise, just proved that notion with his stroke play against Bangladesh.
He and SKY batted together till the end of the powerplay, at which point Yadav was dismissed for 29 runs in 14 deliveries. Sanju Samson was dismissed about two overs later. Looking to hit Mustafizur Rahman’s ball out of the ground, he instead ended up handing the ball to Jaker Ali, getting out for 29 in 19 balls.
Aakash Chopra Comments On Sanju Samson Knock
Reviewing the match in a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra commented on Sanju Samson’s inning, saying that he looked good while playing his shots.
“The silken touch was seen. He wasn’t hitting the ball hard. It seemed like he didn’t want to hurt the ball, and he was hitting one four after another. When everyone was hitting, he also hit, but by caressing the ball. You were getting hit; you were bleeding, but you were not feeling the pain,” said Chopra.
The former Indian batter then went on to say that for how good he looked on the pitch, Sanju should have batted a bit longer because if he doesn’t score more runs, the team will drop him. He said,
“He is good. He scored 29 runs. My only thing was that since he had reached here, he should go slightly further ahead. He should score a few more runs because, otherwise, they would drop him. He keeps moving in and out (of the team) and up and down (the batting order).”
Aakash Chopra also reminded everyone of the time when current Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir talked about Samson’s lack of opportunities in the national team.
Gautam Gambhir said long back that if Sanju Samson doesn’t play for India, it’s India’s loss. He was made to open,” he recalled.
Finally, Chopra hoped that Sanju Samson would play an amazing inning in the remaining two games of this series, saying,
“At least he got a good start, and I really hope that a big knock comes in Delhi or the last match in Hyderabad, so that you stay in everybody’s thoughts. Suryakumar Yadav also said that the captain will play like this. It was a dominating performance. In fact, the ball he got out to wasn’t a wicket-taking ball; he played a good shot as well, but just found a fielder in the deep.”
At the time of Sanju Samson’s dismissal, India was already at 80/3 in eight overs. Hardik Pandya then came onto the field and scored a quickfire 39-off-16, chasing the target down with 49 balls and seven wickets to spare.
The second India vs Bangladesh T20I will be played on Wednesday, October 9, in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
