He came onto the pitch to replace Sebastian Coates in the first half. In the 84th minute, he just collapsed onto the pitch without making any contact with any other player. The Uruguayan was immediately taken off the field after both sides called for medical assistance, following which he was rushed to the hospital.
In the statement released by Nacional, the clin expressed condolences to the family of the deceased player, who left behind his wife and two children. The original release, which was written in Spanish, when translated into English read:
“It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. All of Nacional is mourning his irreparable loss. RIP. Juan, you will be with us forever.”
After a few days of treatment, Izquierdo passed away on Tuesday, August 27. The Albert Einstein Hospital’s coroner revealed that the cause of death was a cardiac arrest. However, a full autopsy is yet to be done, which will give more insight into what actually caused his death.
Juan Izquierdo was a centre-back for Nacional. Signed from Uruguayan club ‘Liverpool’ (not related to the English side), Juan played 111 games in the Uruguayan Primera Division and scored seven goals in his career.
Alejandro Dominguez, who is the president of South American Football Governing Body CONMEBOL, released a short statement for the friends and family of the player, saying, “South American football is in mourning.“
Following Izquierdo’s collapse onto the pitch, all first and second-division games in Uruguay on the weekend were postponed. Sao Paolo FC, who were Juan’s last on-field rivals, wore a shirt in his support during their 2-1 victory over Vitoria in the Brazilian league.
