Can CSK retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player: The Chennai Super Kings have asked the BCCI to reintroduce their rule of allowing a player who has been retired for more than five years to be retained as an uncapped player in order to retain MS Dhoni for the price of an uncapped player.
This news has shaken everyone as CSK went back to the rule book to dig this rule out in their bid to retain Dhoni for the minimum price possible.
The franchise owners met with IPL CEO Hemang Amin on July 31 in Mumbai to discuss the IPL 2025 mega auction retention rules, which was the main agenda for the meeting, along with a number of other topics.
As per a recent report in ESPNcricinfo, CSK have suggested that the IPL bring back their rule that was scrapped in 2021.
Can CSK retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player?
According to this rule, if a player was retired from international cricket for more than five years, he would be considered an uncapped player. That way, a franchise could retain him for the price of an uncapped player. In the IPL 2022 mega-auction, the price for an uncapped player’s retention was INR 4 crore.
CSK wishes to retain Dhoni, but his current retention price is INR 12 crore. If they are allowed to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player, CSK could retain an extra capped player. Dhoni had announced his international retirement on August 15, 2020 and played his last game in 2019.
Other franchises, though, opposed this suggestion from CSK. There was a particular voice against this request from CSK from SRH owner Kavya Maran. It is believed that Maran said that allowing a retired player to be retained as uncapped would be “disrespecting” the cricketer. Maran reckoned that the player should instead go back to the auction and let the market decide his value.
Recently, Dhoni appeared at an event in Hyderabad, where he opened up about whether he would play next year. The 43-year-old said that he will make a call on his IPL future once the IPL council has finalized the retention rules.
Dhoni said,
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention, etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.
“So, once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will take a call, but it needs to be in the best interest of the team.”
