It seemed like all those formless innings so far in the ongoing T20 World Cup were just a warm-up for yesterday, as Rohit Sharma knocked Australia out of the party by crashing it with a smasher of an innings. The Indian skipper was ruthless and relentless on the crease to build his 92 out of 41, giving India their first imperial victory over a formidable opponent in the 2024th edition.
Though the match started in its usual fashion—I mean, Virat Kohli going back to the pavilion soon, even quicker this time—Rohit didn’t fumble at all. He made Starc’s second over a nightmare for the bowler by hitting 4 sixes and a boundary, as if those two daunting ICC final defeats to the Kangaroos were flashing in his mind. Those 4 sixes were half of the ones he scored in his entire innings which was enough for him to get into the book of records with a new one: the first batter to hit 200 T20I sixes. How sweet is that?
Rohit Sharma Records in the Taste of Vengeance
In fact, this wasn’t the only record that came out of the Hitman’s bat last night. You could name as many as 10 if you are ready to count. He is just behind King Kohli in scoring the most runs in the T20 World Cup. Though Virat has been a wet cracker across the tournament, he has been the best batter ever in T20 World Cup history since its onset in 2007. While Kohli has 1207 runs, Rohit is so close with 1154.
Though Rohit is behind in numbers in the World Cup, he leads in overall international T20Is, relinquishing the record of Pakistan’s Babar Azam with a humongous 4165 runs on his scoreboard.
He also leads the not-so-classy Indian batters in the current edition, amassing 191 runs in six innings. 92 of these have come in the last innings which says how bad the Indian batters have been in this tournament. Rishabh Pant (167) is just behind him with his savior knocks in the initial matches, and SKY sits at third with 149 runs. How well would Sanju Samson have performed given his strong history on these tricky pitches? If given a chance, we would have known.
Rohit’s 50 was in just 19 deliveries, which made him the third Indian to score a half-century in under 20 deliveries. Yuvraj leads the list with his mind-boggling 36-an-over riot against Stuart Broad in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup. Yuvi just needed 12 balls to reach fifty.
This fifty is the fastest in Rohit’s career. Also the fastest against Australia by a batter. Here he could smack down the record of Yuvi, as the latter needed a ball more to get to the half-hundred.
It doesn’t end there. Maybe he is the one who gave the most nightmares to the mighty Kangaroos in T20I history. Well, at least the records say that. The 37-year-old’s 8 sixes yesterday were the most by any batter in T20Is against the Aussies and the most by an Indian batter in a T20 WC match. This also contributed heavily to India’s 15 sixes, the third highest in a T20 World Cup match, a new record registered by smashing their own, which was created just two days ago against Bangladesh.
His smothering 29 runs against Starc is the most expensive over Starc has ever had in his career. In fact, it was so close to India’s 30-run riot against Glenn Maxwell in 2023, which still stands as the highest an Australian has ever conceded in an over in T20Is.
These all contributed to his tall 92 runs, which is itself a record, the second highest by an Indian in the T20 World Cup, just behind Suresh Raina, who smoked Proteas with a stunning 60-ball century in 2010.
