WI vs NZ 2024 T20 World Cup Match Report: The West Indies defeated New Zealand by 13 runs in Match 26 of the 2024 T20 World Cup to confirm a place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.
The Group C contest was played in the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad, and saw New Zealand win the toss and decide to bowl first.

And the decision to start partying off almost immediately, as Johnson Charles was bowled by Trent Boult in the first over, In came Nicholas Pooran, who did try to build a partnership with Brandon King, but Pooran was dismissed in the fourth over.
Before the end of the powerplay, the West Indies also lost their captain, Rovman Powell, and the score hadn’t even crossed 25 yet. The whole Windies top order fell as King was dismissed in the seventh over, as four different bowlers had taken wickets so far: Boult, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, and James Neesham.

But from this point, Sherfane Rutherford and Akeal Hosein built a decent partnership, taking the team past 50 before Hosein was dismissed by Mitchell Santner in the 11th over.
Andre Russell came in, scored a couple of boundaries, scored 14 runs in seven balls, and was then dismissed, providing some necessary speed boost to the inning. While the batter came and went, Rutherford played a brilliant inning of 68-off-39 to power his side to 149 runs at the end of their 20 overs.
With a target of 150 in hand, Devon Conway and Ginn Allen took to the pitch. The Kiwis found a decent start before Conway was dismissed in the third over. Fin Allen returned to the pavilion right before the powerplay ended, and this is where the floodgates opened.
With a score of 34/2 at the end of the sixth, New Zealand lost captain Kane Willimson’s wicket in the seventh over, Rachin Ravindra was dismissed in the ninth, and Gudakesh Motie took his third wicket in a row when he bowled Daryl Mitchell in the 11th over with the score being 65/5.
Now positively in trouble, Glenn Phillips and James Neesham tried salvaging the inning and batted for four overs together before Neesham was dismissed. Soon after, Phillips became Alzarri Joseph’s third scalp. Tim Southee was dismissed on the very next ball, leaving New Zealand with 42 runs required in two overs with two wickets in hand.
With Boult and Santner on strike, Andre Russell gave up only nine runs in the 19th over and took Boult’s wicket.
With 33 required in the last over, Santner got three sixes in the first four balls, but the match had ended by then. New Zealand lost the game by 13 wickets and is now all but out of the tournament.
As for the West Indies, they became the first team in Group C to qualify for the Super 8 with three wins in three games. Afghanistan is not far behind, with two wins in two.
For his brilliant half-century that took the West Indies to a respectable total, Sherfane Rutherford was named the Player of the Match.
