Sanjay Manjrekar on Rinku Singh Omission: Veteran commentator Sanjay Manjrekar took a dig at the BCCI selectors for not picking Rinku Singh in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad despite the left-hander’s terrific T20I record. On the other hand, Manjrekar also took tacit shots at the selectors for continuing with, without naming but hinting at, the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Rinku Singh’s omission from India’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, which will start in June, has caused frustration and sadness among the fans, while some of the ex-cricketers and commentators have also spoken against this decision from the selectors.
Since last year’s IPL, Rinku has emerged as India’s best finisher among the current players. He got a chance in the national team and played several impressive knocks. In 11 T20I innings, Rinku scored 356 runs while remaining not out seven times. The most important aspect of his batting has been his terrific strike rate of 176.

Sanjay Manjrekar on Rinku Singh omission
Writing in his column for the Hindustan Times, Manjrekar said that the BCCI selectors seemed to have learned not much from the semi-final exit against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide, where Rohit Sharma (27 off 28) and Virat Kohli (50 off 40) played match-losing innings with a conservative mindset.
Manjrekar wrote, “Given that the selectors said not much credence will be given to IPL performances while selecting the World Cup squad, it’s surprising that the last T20 WC performance of the senior batters was not a red flag. The same yardstick did not apply for Rinku Singh, who would have walked into that WC squad based on his recent T20 international performances”
It’s been 17 years since India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa. Since then, India have not won the T20 world title, despite their players regularly featuring in the IPL and doing well.
Manjrekar reckons it’s down to the fact that the T20 World Cup is about half the length of the IPL, and in such a short tournament, it’s not always necessary that the best team will win.
The commentator added, “Unlike IPL, the T20 WC is a very short tournament, so a lot is left to chance. One wide here or there costs you the game and with it your shot at the title. Maybe it’s why we have had six different champions in eight editions. It’s not always about which T20 side is truly the greatest in the world. Sometimes, it’s about the team that had the best four weeks.”
