Axar Patel Dislikes Impact Player Rule In IPL: Delhi Capitals star-allrounder Axar Patel has expressed his dislike towards the Impact Player rule in the IPL, claiming that it diminishes the role of allrounders in the game.
The Impact Player rule was introduced in the IPL in the 2023 season. It allows for a team to make a substitution at any point in the game from a pre-announced list of five players. This also enables the teams to make more than one playing 11s before the match and only announce their squad after the toss result is announced.
Naturally, teams have looked to increase the number of specialist batters and bowlers in their squad with the help of the rule. If a team bats first, they can play seven proper batters and can then replace them with a bowler after their innings.

While all-rounders still have a place in the sides and play crucial roles for their team, the Impact Player rule has somewhat diminished the need for a world-class all-rounder in the side. Teams no longer need players who can bowl four overs and bat up the order.
This is why the likes of Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag, and Venkatesh Iyer, who can prove to be a threat with the ball are no longer bowling because their team now plays them as specialist batters.
Axar Patel Dislikes Impact Player Rule In IPL
The opinion that this rule negatively affects all-rounders is held by one of the best ones in IPL at the moment, Delhi Capitals’ Axar Patel.
In a recent interview with a group of journalists, Axar Patel showed his dislike for the Impact Player rule and said that the teams no longer use all-rounders like they used to before, saying –
“I am not a huge fan of the Impact Player rule. Teams either use proper batters or proper bowlers but nobody is using all-rounders. So I am not a fan of it.”
Axar Patel, who has been sent down the order by his franchise this season, also commented on how the rule affects batters and their mentality when coming to the middle.
“Because of the Impact Player rule, there’s an extra player. Teams think that if the batting doesn’t do well, they can get an extra batter and if it does well, they’ll get an extra bowler. So, whoever comes in starts hitting from the first ball. I am seeing this from the last two years that no one likes to take time because they know they can have batters till number seven or eight,” said Patel.
Finally, Axar opened up about how the Impact Player rule has had an impact on his bowling, he said –
“Whoever is making the rules is thinking that only batting will decide where the game would go (smiles). It has obviously become very difficult for bowlers. But the way I see it is, there’s pressure but there’s also opportunity to do well in such situations and use your skills.”
Delhi Capitals is not doing too well in IPL 2024. In eighth place with six points in eight matches, they will face Gujarat Titans in their next match on April 24 in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
