As soon as he came onto the pitch, Sarfaraz Khan was asked some difficult questions by a fiery Mark Wood, who had crippled the Indian top order earlier in the day.
But as soon as the spinner came into play, Sarfaraz dominated. The right-handed batter played some aesthetically pleasing shots on the backfoot, the most memorable of them being a square cut to a wider ball by Rehan Ahmed. He also showed his front-foot prowess, scoring boundaries and a six down the ground.
Khan reached the 50-run mark in just 48 balls, scoring his maiden Test half-century with a 100+ strike rate.
Ravindra Jadeja, who was in his 80s when Sarfaraz Khan walked into bat, was in the nervous 90s when the debutant scored his 50. Seeing how Jaddu went into a shell, Sarfaraz tried to get to his 100 with some impressive running between the wickets, but that is where this wonderful innings ended.
At 99, Jadeja played the ball towards mid-off and called for a run, but Mark Wood quickly gathered the ball. Before Sarfaraz could return back to the crease, Wood smashed up the wickets and Khan was run out in his first-ever Test innings. He was dismissed for 62 off 66 balls.
