India vs England 2nd Test Day 4 Report: It was quite fitting that it was Jasprit Bumrah who scalped the last wicket of the match, that too bowled, in Visakhapatnam that completed India’s series-leveling win in the second Test against England.
Even though England scored the second-highest fourth-innings total by a visiting team in India, they fell 107 runs short of the target of 399 that India had set them on the evening of Day 3.
England were, as had been expected, brisk in their chase, scoring at 4.21 runs per over, but India kept chipping away with wickets. Five wickets in the first session of the day put India way ahead in the game, before the wickets of Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes all but sealed it for the hosts.
India vs England 2nd Test Day 4 Report: Jasprit Bumrah shines once again with the ball
England started the day at 67/1. India scalped two wickets in the first hour of the day: Axar Patel removed night-watchman Rehan Ahmed, and R Ashwin got Ollie Pope caught by Rohit Sharma at first slip.
CHECK OUT:
Joe Root, dealing with a finger injury, came out swinging and walloped two fours and a six in his first 9 balls, before a wild and ugly slog off Ashwin, which he top-edged to Axar at backward point, brought his downfall.
The big breakthrough for India came when Kuldeep Yadav got Zak Crawley LBW for 73 runs, but it needed India to take DRS after the batter was given not out. It was a contentious outcome as initially the ball seemed to be heading down leg, but Hawkeye showed a straight path after pitching and the ball to be ‘Hitting’ leg-stump.
At the stroke of lunch, with Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes in the middle, Rohit recalled Bumrah, who instantly delivered with Bairstow’s wicket, given out LBW and showing ‘Umpire’s Call’ after Bairstow took DRS.
After lunch, Ben Stokes handed himself to India on a silver platter with some lazy running between the wickets as Shreyas Iyer hit the bullseye for a direct-hit run-out. The end was nigh, but the hosts were given a brief scare by a 55-run stand between Foakes and Tom Hartley. Cue Jasprit Bumrah again: the fast bowler foxed Foakes with a slower ball for a return catch.
Shoaib Bashir edged Mukesh Kumar for the pacer’s first wicket of the match before Bumrah knocked Hartley’s off-stump to conclude a 106-run win and a magnificent performance from the 30-year-old speedster.
While Yashasvi Jaiswal was a strong contender for the Man of the Match award for his double century, Bumrah had left no doubt that he should be given the award for his figures of 9/91 in the match that was played on a good batting surface.
