Pretty Zinta and Ness Wadia, who were present at the auction, became the sole bidders for Shashank Singh but realized that they had chosen the ‘wrong player’.

The confusion arose when Shashank‘s name was called by the auctioneer, Mallika Sagar, during the accelerated round. The 32-year-old, who plays for Chattisgarh in domestic cricket, had gone unsold in the previous year’s auction after being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
To everyone’s surprise, the Punjab Kings became the sole bidder for the uncapped all-rounder in Dubai. However, as the auctioneer confirmed Shashank’s sale to the franchise, PBKS owners Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta realized their mistake. They conveyed to the auctioneer that they had confused Shashank with another player, indicating that the purchase was unintentional.
Despite the confusion, the auctioneer, Mallika Sagar, stood firm, stating, “The hammer has come down now,” indicating that Punjab Kings could not reverse their decision once the hammer fell.
The owners expressed a desire to put Shashank back into the auction, but auction rules prohibit such actions after the hammer confirms a purchase, solidifying the transaction.
Discussing the incident on Jio Cinema, anchor Suhail Chandok criticized the franchise’s lack of clarity in their tactics, emphasizing that such confusion is not expected during an auction where teams are typically clear with their plans. Mike Hesson, an expert on the show, also questioned Punjab’s performance in the auction, expressing uncertainty about what the team achieved, noting they had many backups but lacked substance.
Notably, the most significant purchase for Punjab Kings was Harshal Patel, acquired for INR 11.75 crore. Shashank, with a T20 record of 55 matches, 724 runs at a strike rate of 135.83, and 15 wickets, remains an intriguing addition to the team despite the initial confusion.
