The Punjab Kings defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 17 of IPL 2026, which was a high-scoring game. But why did SRH lose to RR in this game?
The Kings won the toss on their home ground at the PCA New Cricket Stadium and decided to bowl first. The Sunrisers got off to an excellent start to their inning and put up a score of 219/6 in 20 overs.
In response, Punjab chased this target down with relative ease. Most of their batting attack shone as they chased this target down with six wickets and seven balls to spare.
Here, we will discuss the three reasons why Sunrisers Hyderabad lost to Punjab Kings in today’s game of the Indian Premier League.
Why Sunrisers Hyderabad Lost To Punjab Kings
1) A Poor Finish By The Sunrisers
Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a flying start to their innings. The 2016 IPL champions have one of the best opening pairs in this league in the form of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, and both of them fired today.
Two started attacking right out of the gate. Sharma scored an 18-ball half-century, and at the end of the powerplay, SRH were standing strong at 105/0, the joint third-best score in the powerplay in IPL history.
After Head (38 off 23) and Abhishek (74 off 28) got out in the same over, stand-in captain Ishan Kishan took charge of scoring boundaries. At the 10th over mark, the Hyderabad score was 132/2.
However, from this point on, the run rate slowed. While Kishan was still fairly attacking, the No. 4 batter Heinrich Klaasen seemed to have stuck on the crease in the worst way possible, eating balls and not hitting boundaries.
At the point of Ishan’s wicket at the end of the 14th over, the score was 169/3, which means only 60 runs were made in the death overs. Much of that was because of Klaasen, who played 33 deliveries, many of which were in the death, and scored just 39 runs.
PBKS all-rounder Shashank Singh should get a lot of credit for slowing the innings down, seeing that he dismissed Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in the ninth over and ended his three-over spell with solid figures of 2/20.
Salil Arora was yet another player who abetted slowly, making nine off eight. It was a few quick runs by Aniket Verma, who made 18 off nine, that SRH managed to reach a respectable total of 219, which was a far cry from a 250+ score that they would have been eyeing around the midpoint of the innings.
2) The Prabh-Arya Connection
The Punjab Kings’ opening duo of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya has yet to score big runs together this season. Well, that happened today, as the two formed a 99-run partnership that set the chase up well for Punjab.
Both batters came out with one mindset: to cause carnage. Priyansh got to hit from the first over, hitting Harsh Dubey for 18 runs. This was followed by two 11-run overs from Jaydev Unadkat and Eshan Malinga before Unadkat was hit for 15 in his second. Malinga was hit for 17 in his second, and Harshal Patel, who bowled the final over of the powerplay, conceded 21.
At the sixth over mark, the score was 93/0, and Priyansh Arya had scored a half-century in 16 balls. While Arya did get out in the next over for 57 off 20, the 99-run opening stand meant that the Kings were ahead in the game at this point.
However, Prabhsimran Singh, soon after reaching his 50 in 24 balls in the ninth over, got out. And just like that, the match was dead even, with Punjab needing some solid batting from their middle order.
3) A Captain’s Knock From The ‘Sarpanch’
Shreyas Iyer was the key to the Punjab Kings’ successful IPL season in 2025. He delivered as a captain and a batter. However, this season, he hadn’t got too many runs. That was about to change today.
Coope Connolly departed for 11 off 12 in the 11th over, and the team score was 128/3, and 92 runs were required in 52 balls. Iyer was in a position where he had to steer his team to victory, which is exactly what he did.
First with Nehal Wadhera, and then with Shashank Singh, Shreyas formed partnerships in which he took charge of scoring runs. Wadhera made just 14 runs in as many balls, and Shashank finished the game with 16 off nine, but Shreyas Iyer’s not out 69 off 33 saw the Kings be taken to that finish line.
For his excellent innings that saved the game for the Kings, Iyer was named the Player of the Match.
With this win, PBKS has climbed to second in the IPL 2026 table with three wins, one no result, and seven points in four games.
