The event, which consists of the Men’s Open tournament and Women’s Tournament, is an international competition where national teams battle out to take the trophies home. The event is open to any country that has a chess governing body associated with FIDE.

Chess Olympiad was first officially organized in 1927 in London, UK. The first controversial event came in 1936 when Nazi Germany organized an Olympiad of their own. This competition has since been declared unofficial.
After 11 years of inactivity due to World War 2, the event in 1950 was organized in the newly formed Yugoslavia. The first Olympiad to be held outside Europe was in 1966 when Cuba was awarded hosting rights.

Several Communist block and Arab countries refused to participate in the 22nd official Chess Olympiad in Haifa Isreal. As a counter to that tournament, an unofficial ‘Against Chess Olympiad was organized. Here, Tunisia became the first African and Pakistan became the first Asian country to win medals. Although, these feats are not recognized.
In 1978, a Women’s Competition was added to the Olympiad too, with both – the Open and Women’s tournaments adding up to make the Chess Olympiad.
After the fall of the Soviet Union (who had won 18 gold medals in competition history), Russia has been the most successful country in the Olympiad, winning six gold on the trot from 1992 to 2002.
The 2020 and 2021 Olympiads were organized online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent competition in 2022 was held in Chennai, India.

2024 host nation Hungary’s history in Chess Olympiad
Hungary has had a storied history in the Chess Olympiad. Since the competition officially started in 1927, the Central European nation has won three golds, seven silvers, and two bronze medals, and is the fourth most successful nation in tournament history.
Hungary also hosted the second unofficial Chess Olympiad in 1926, back when FIDE was trying to get Chess into the Olympics.

India’s history in the Chess Olympiad
India’s first participation in a FIDE-organised Chess Olympiad was in 1956 when the event was held in Moscow, Soviet Union.
After years and decades of no success, despite improving year on year, we arrived in 2014. This was the first time India, a country to which the roots of the game’s invention can be can be attributed, won a bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway.
India has since emerged as a powerhouse of Chess on the global stage. In the first online Olympiad in 2020, India won joint gold along with Russia and won a joint bronze alongside China in 2021.
India also had the honor of hosting the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai. As the host nation, India won a historic bronze medal in the Open’s and Women’s team sections each, while winning seven medals in individual competitions.
