Former legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger calls out the ‘bias’ in the media favoring Argentina’s Inter Miami player Lionel Messi. Wenger was addressing the unfair criticisms about Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Wenger Calls Out Media Favoring Messi Over CR7
There aren’t any doubts that Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘bad boy’ status and Lionel Messi’s ‘good boy’ status are media constructs. The Portuguese has been getting hunted for even scoring goals, as the media portrays the opposition as weak. But when Leo Messi scores against the same nations, the media praises the Argentine, and Wenger calls this ‘hypocrisy’ out. Wenger says this has been happening since day one.
“It’s hypocritical to criticize Cristiano Ronaldo for scoring against lower ranked nations then praise Messi for scoring against those same nations. It’s clear who the media has bias to and that’s been the story since day one.”

The football world has started calling this out since Messi’s winning many Ballon d’Ors is seen as undeserving.
German legend Lothar Matthaus earlier told Sky Germany that Messi’s 2023 win of the Ballon d’Or was ‘undeserved’ and ‘farce’. he thinks Manchester City sensation Erling Haaland was the worthy one.
“Over the whole of last year, Haaland performed better than Messi. It’s undeserved that Messi won. But that shows that a World Cup counts more than anything else. For me, Haaland is the best player of the last twelve months won major titles with Manchester City ( Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup in England), and broke goalscoring records in the process. For me, there is no way around Haaland. The choice is a farce, even though I am a Messi fan.”
Now that both Ronaldo and Messi are playing for their countries in the Euros and Copa America, respectively, the media hunt for Ronaldo continues. The 2024 World Topscorer is getting crucified for not finding the net in group stages despite qualifying the knockouts as group leaders. Lionel Messi, who also failed to score a goal in the Copa, is getting lauded by the same media.
What’s Next for Messi And Ronaldo
Messi’s Argentina is continuing their dominant run in Copa America. They started with a 2-0 win over Canada in the first match and then surpassed the mammoth in the group, Chile for a solitary goal from Lautaro Martines. The 2022 World Cup winners have already booked a seat in the knockout stage and will be facing Peru in the final group match on Sunday. Leo & Co. are favorites to win the tournament along with Uruguay and the ‘misfiring’ Brazil.
In Euros, Portugal completed the group stages by winning two of the three matches on their table. Starting with a sweaty win over Czechia, Cristiano’s team went on to thrash Turkey for 3 goals in the second match. they had already confirmed the Round of 16 berth when they went to play Georgia in the third game and this assurance might have made them less sharp. Georgia thumped Portugal by 2 goals and snatched a deserving place in the knockouts by being one of the four best third-place teams.
Portugal will face Slovenia in the Round of 16 on July 2 at the Deutsche Bank Park, Frankfurt.
