Wasim Jaffer Says Kohli Should Open For India: Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has suggested that Virat Kohli, not Rohit Sharma, should open for India in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Rohit Sharma will captain India for the second time in a T20 World Cup. In the last such tournament in 2022, India reached the semi-final before losing to eventual champions England by 10 wickets.
This time, several players who were not part of the last World Cup’s squad will be in this one, chief among them being Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is expected to be one of the openers for India in the upcoming tournament.

Captain Sharma is expected to open alongside Jaiswal in the tournament. The two have become a solid opening duo for India across all formats.
While Virat Kohli is also being looked at as an opening option, he will most likely come in to bat at No. 3 for the team.
Wasim Jaffer Says Kohli Should Open For India
Wasim Jaffer, who represented India in the early 2000s and had a legendary domestic career, believes, however, that it should be the duo of Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal who should open for India.
Jaffer recently tweeted out that Rohit Sharma is a brilliant player of spin and should hence come a little later in the batting order, at third or fourth. This would leave Virat and Yashasvi to open.
“Kohli & Jaiswal should open in the World Cup imo. Rohit & SKY should bat 3&4 depending on the start we get. Rohit plays spin really well so batting at 4 shouldn’t be a concern. #T20WorldCup #INDvPAK #INDvIRE,” wrote Wasim Jaffer.
Another reason Wasim Jaffer might have suggested this opening pair is how well Virat Kohli played in the IPL 2024. This season, Kohli scored a whopping 741 runs for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69.
India is in Group A of the 2024 T20 World Cup. After playing Bangladesh in a warm-up game on June 1, the Men in Blue will kick off their tournament on June 5. Next will be a game against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 8. The third game in the group for India will be against co-hosts the USA on June 12, followed by the game against Canada on June 15.
