Former Indian fielding coach T Dilip recently opened up about his five-year journey with the Indian cricket team. He described Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as great stewards of Indian cricket. He said Rohit gave him the freedom to express himself. He never took the stance of “I am the captain, so you have to listen.” He also praised Virat for his knowledge and willingness to share. He said Virat was always ready to help set the team’s strategy.

Dilip said it felt strange not being with the team anymore. He admitted there was a sense of sadness and emptiness. But he also felt fulfilled after serving for five years. He described it as a good period and said he was grateful for the experience.

He said the 2024 T20 World Cup win was a big moment. But more than the trophies, the relationships he built with the players were unforgettable. He also mentioned the fun atmosphere in the dressing room, especially after the fielding medal was introduced in 2023. He said the anticipation and the way it was awarded created a lively environment.

He said the head coach and captain carry the main responsibility. He worked with both Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir. His job was to understand their philosophy and carry it forward. He said the support staff must align with the leadership.

T Dilip on Motivating Bowlers and Future Plans

Dilip explained his approach to motivating bowlers. He coordinated with the bowling coach, physiotherapist, and strength coach to understand workload. He prepared their mindset by making them understand that their job was not limited to fielding at fine leg or third man. He praised the bowlers for putting in the effort during optional sessions.

He shared a story about Mohammed Siraj in Sri Lanka. After bowling five overs, Siraj chased a ball all the way to the boundary to save a run. Dilip said that was the greatest example of commitment from a bowler.

Dilip first saw Shubman Gill at a camp in 2015. He said even back then, Gill had a spark. He praised Gill’s hard work and dedication. He said Gill loves batting and puts in extra effort even after practice. He also completes fielding drills and running sessions before leaving. He credited Gill’s success to his discipline and behind-the-scenes effort.

The best compliment he received came from Rahul Dravid. Dravid told him that he had made a significant contribution to the team environment. Dilip said hearing that from a legend was the most satisfying moment.

Dilip said he is taking a break for a few weeks. He plans to continue coaching for another 10 to 12 years. He has not decided on a specific team yet. He also said he might explore the media side of cricket. His decision will depend on how things unfold. He is open to opportunities but is in no rush.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma: Upcoming ODI Fixtures and 2027 World Cup Roadmap

India have completed their Test series against Sri Lanka. The team will now shift focus to white-ball cricket. The immediate assignment is a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in Delhi. Shreyas Iyer will lead the side in that series.

After that, India will host West Indies for a three-match ODI series. The matches will be played on September 27, 30, and October 3 in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, and New Chandigarh. This series will mark the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket. Both players only feature in ODIs now.

India have several ODI assignments before the 2027 World Cup. They will tour New Zealand for five ODIs in November. A home series against Sri Lanka follows in December, with three ODIs. Zimbabwe will then visit India for three ODIs in January 2027. These matches will help the team finalize their playing XI for the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Both players last featured in the ODI series against England in July. India lost that series 1-2, but Kohli and Rohit had positive returns. Kohli scored 74 off 60 balls at Lord’s. Rohit scored a record-breaking century in the same match.

Kohli has scored 384 runs from six ODIs this year at an average of 64.00. He has one century and three half-centuries. He missed the Afghanistan series due to injury. Rohit has 379 runs from nine ODIs at an average of 42.11. Apart from his century, he has only one other fifty-plus score.

Despite their stature, both players will need to keep performing to stay in the World Cup plans. Kohli will turn 38 in November, while Rohit will be 40 by the time of the tournament.
