What Are Sunrisers Hyderabad?

SRH are a professional T20 cricket team that represents Hyderabad in the IPL. The franchise was established in 2012 and made its tournament debut in 2013, replacing the former Deccan Chargers team.

The franchise is owned by Sun TV Network Limited, a media company founded by Kalanithi Maran. SRH play their home matches at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium and are known for combining experienced international players with young Indian talent.

The team won its first IPL title in 2016, defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final. It reached the championship match again in 2018 and 2024, finishing as runner-up on both occasions. The franchise has also reached the playoffs in several other seasons, making it a regular contender in the competition.

History of Sunrisers Hyderabad

SRH were introduced ahead of the 2013 IPL season after Deccan Chargers ceased to be part of the competition. The new franchise retained Hyderabad as its home base and began building a squad around a mix of Indian and overseas players.

SRH reached the playoffs in their debut season and continued to compete for knockout places over the following years. Their breakthrough came in 2016, when David Warner led the team to its first IPL championship. Sunrisers defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by eight runs in a high-scoring final, defending a target of 209.

The franchise continued to perform well in subsequent seasons. In 2018, SRH finished at the top of the league-stage standings and reached the final, but Chennai Super Kings defeated them to win the championship.

After several seasons of mixed results, SRH returned to the final in 2024. The team produced one of the most aggressive batting campaigns in IPL history, including a record-breaking 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated SRH in the final.

The franchise finished sixth in 2025 before recovering in 2026. SRH won nine of their 14 league matches and finished third in the standings, but Rajasthan Royals eliminated them from the playoffs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL Titles

SRH have won one IPL championship, which came in 2016. They have also reached the final in 2018 and 2024.

The 2016 final took place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where SRH faced the home team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, then known as Royal Challengers Bangalore. Sunrisers batted first and scored 208/7, with David Warner and Ben Cutting making important contributions. RCB finished on 200/7, giving SRH an eight-run victory and their first IPL trophy.

The team came close to winning another title in 2018, but Chennai Super Kings defeated them in the final. Six years later, SRH returned to the championship match in 2024 after a powerful batting season, only to lose to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Although SRH have not added another title since 2016, their three final appearances and repeated playoff qualifications have made them an established IPL franchise.

The team then struggled in 2021, 2022 and 2023 before returning to the final in 2024. Their 2026 campaign ended in the Eliminator after a third-place finish in the league stage.

SRH finished third in the 2026 league-stage standings, earning 18 points from 14 matches. They recorded nine wins and five defeats, with a net run rate of +0.524. Their performance secured a playoff place, but they did not advance to Qualifier 2.

Pat Cummins was the team’s captain, while Daniel Vettori served as head coach. Ishan Kishan captained SRH during the opening part of the season when Cummins was unavailable, before Cummins returned to lead the side. Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy were among the important batters in the lineup.

SRH finished their league campaign with an emphatic 55-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Batting first, Hyderabad scored 255/4, with Ishan Kishan making 79 off 46 balls, Abhishek Sharma scoring 56 off 22 and Heinrich Klaasen adding 51 off 24. RCB finished on 200/4.

In the Eliminator, SRH faced the Rajasthan Royals in New Chandigarh. Despite entering the playoffs after nine league-stage wins, Hyderabad lost by 47 runs and were knocked out of the tournament. The defeat ended their bid to reach another IPL final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Team Owners

Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain and Coach

Pat Cummins is the captain of SRH, and Daniel Vettori is the head coach. Cummins took over the captaincy ahead of the 2024 season and led the team to the IPL final that year. He continued in the role for the 2026 campaign, although Ishan Kishan captained the side during the opening matches while Cummins was unavailable.

Vettori joined SRH as head coach ahead of the 2024 season. He previously had extensive international and franchise coaching experience, and he helped guide the team to the final in his first IPL season with the franchise.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Home Ground

SRH play their home matches at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. The venue is located in Uppal and has hosted IPL matches as well as international cricket.

The stadium has been central to SRH’s identity since their debut in 2013. It has also hosted several memorable batting performances, including the franchise’s high-scoring campaigns in recent seasons.

Key Players in Sunrisers Hyderabad History

Several Indian and international cricketers have played major roles in SRH’s history. Some contributed to the 2016 title win, while others helped the team reach the finals in 2018 and 2024.

David Warner

David Warner was one of the most important players in SRH’s early history. He captained the team to the IPL title in 2016 and led them to the final in 2018. His aggressive opening batting and leadership helped establish Sunrisers as a competitive franchise.

Warner was also the leading run-scorer in the 2016 season, scoring 848 runs. His performances were central to the team’s championship campaign.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a key member of the Sunrisers bowling attack for many seasons. His swing bowling, accuracy and ability to deliver at the death made him one of the franchise’s most important bowlers.

He won the Purple Cap in consecutive seasons in 2016 and 2017, finishing as the IPL’s leading wicket-taker in both years. He also played an important role in the team’s 2016 championship campaign.

Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan represented SRH from 2017 to 2021 and became one of the team’s most effective bowlers. His leg-spin and ability to control scoring during the middle overs made him a valuable part of the attack.

Rashid played a major role in SRH’s playoff campaigns during his time at the franchise before moving to Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2022 season.

Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson played an important role in SRH’s batting lineup and captained the team during its run to the 2018 IPL final. He was known for his consistency, ability to build innings and calm leadership under pressure.

Williamson won the Orange Cap in 2018 after scoring 735 runs, finishing as the tournament’s leading batter. His performance was one of the major highlights of SRH’s runner-up campaign.

Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma has become one of SRH’s key opening batters. His aggressive approach in the powerplay has helped the team post high totals and chase challenging targets.

He was a major part of the team’s record-breaking batting lineup in 2024 and continued to play an important role in the 2026 season. His partnership with Travis Head has been a feature of SRH’s attacking style.

Travis Head

Travis Head joined SRH ahead of the 2024 season and quickly became a central part of their batting attack. His aggressive stroke play helped SRH produce several high-scoring innings, including the record total of 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
