“Steve Smith has joined the expert panel for the marquee tournament. Smith will be making his broadcast debut with Star Sports, adding his invaluable insights and expertise to Star Sports’ already impressive roster of panelists,” – the broadcaster said in a statement.
Smith, 33, announced his return to the tournament on Twitter on Monday, saying in a teaser video: “Namaste, India. I’ve got some exciting news for you: I’m joining IPL 2023.”
The post created a buzz, leading to speculation that he might make a comeback to the tournament as a player.
Smith’s 15-second video drew a lot of attention on social media, with many finding his robotic performance amusing. The fact that he didn’t blink during the video added to the humor. “DON’T blink if you’re being held at gunpoint,” – one Twitter user quipped.
A different fan suggested that Smith should stick to using his bat instead of the microphone during his return to India. Smith had recently captained Australia in two Tests and three one-day internationals in India.
In 2021, Smith participated in the profitable IPL tournament as a member of the Delhi Capitals team. However, he was not selected in the auction for the following season.
