When he was meeting the media as part of the semifinal against New Zealand, questions were raised regarding the pitch controversy, and his reply made the crowd burst into laughter.

Later on, the ICC had to come up with an official explanation, saying the pitch is decided and prepared by an independent curator, and it is not uncommon to use used pitches in knockout matches.
“This change was made on the recommendation of the venue curator in conjunction with our host,” the ICC stated. “Changes to planned pitch rotations are common towards the end of an event of this length and have already happened a couple of times. The ICC independent pitch consultant was apprised of the change and has no reason to believe the pitch won’t play well” said the ICC in an official statement.
