Inserted to bowl first, the Invincibles wasted no time asserting dominance. Jason Behrendorff and Jordan Clark struck early blows, removing Keaton Jennings, David Warner, and Kane Williamson inside the first 20 balls. From there, the innings unravelled. Ashton Turner offered some resistance with 21, but the remainder of the line-up mustered little.
Rashid Khan, making his debut for the Invincibles, returned a miserly 3 for 11 from 20 deliveries. Sam Curran was just as effective, claiming 3 for 18 from 19. Between them, they bowled 25 dot balls, a measure of Spirit’s impotence as much as the Invincibles’ control. Seven of Spirit’s batters failed to reach double figures; the final total of 80 was both underwhelming and unsurprising given the collapse.
The chase was hardly a formality but seldom in doubt. Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye laid a brisk foundation, reaching 45 before the latter departed. A brief stutter followed, Jacks, Jordan Cox, and Curran fell in quick succession, but captain Sam Billings and newcomer Donovan Ferreira ensured there would be no late drama. The winning runs arrived with 31 balls to spare.
For Spirit, Liam Dawson offered the only cheer, returning from England Test duty to take 2 for 9. But in the absence of Jamie Smith, Ollie Pope and Jamie Overton, still recovering from the five-day contest at The Oval on August 4, Spirit looked short of balance and belief.
Oval Invincibles, meanwhile, appear every bit the defending champions: ruthless, composed, and unrelenting.
