Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are a franchise cricket team based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team joined the competition in 2022 alongside the Gujarat Titans and reached the playoffs in both of its first two seasons. Despite those strong starts, LSG have yet to win an IPL title and have missed the playoffs in each season since 2024.

Owned by RPSG Sports Private Limited, part of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, LSG play their home matches at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. The franchise has featured several prominent players, including KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh.

LSG’s first two seasons established them as playoff contenders, but their performances declined in the following campaigns. They finished seventh in 2024 and 2025 before ending the 2026 season in tenth place, their lowest league position so far.

What Is Lucknow Super Giants?

LSG are one of the IPL’s newer franchises. The team was formed in 2021 after the BCCI introduced two additional teams for the 2022 season. LSG represent Lucknow and the wider state of Uttar Pradesh in India’s premier T20 competition.

The franchise is part of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group’s sports business, which also owns teams in other cricket competitions. LSG built their early squads around experienced Indian players and international performers, with KL Rahul serving as captain during their first three seasons.

The team reached the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, finishing third in both campaigns. However, they have not progressed beyond the league stage since then and remain in search of their first IPL championship.

Lucknow Super Giants History

LSG began their IPL journey in 2022 and made an immediate impact by reaching the playoffs. Their first two seasons ended with Eliminator defeats, but the results showed that the new franchise could compete with more established teams.

The 2024 campaign was more difficult, as Lucknow finished seventh and failed to qualify for the playoffs. They repeated that league-stage exit in 2025, despite signing Rishabh Pant for a record ₹27 crore at the mega auction ahead of the season.

In 2026, LSG struggled again and finished at the bottom of the points table. They won four of their 14 matches, while Mitchell Marsh led their batting and Prince Yadav emerged as their leading wicket-taker. Pant stepped down as captain after the season, and the franchise subsequently completed a trade that sent him to Delhi Capitals in exchange for Kuldeep Yadav.

Lucknow Super Giants Season-by-Season Results

The following table summarises LSG’s performance in each IPL season from 2022 through 2026.

IPL 2022: A Strong Debut Season

LSG made their IPL debut in 2022 under captain KL Rahul and head coach Andy Flower. The team finished third in the league stage with nine wins from 15 matches, including a match affected by a no-result.

LSG qualified for the playoffs but lost the Eliminator to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite the defeat, their debut season was a success because they reached the knockout stage immediately after joining the competition. KL Rahul led the team’s batting with 616 runs, while Avesh Khan took 18 wickets.

IPL 2023: Another Playoff Appearance

Lucknow reached the playoffs for a second consecutive season in 2023. They finished third in the league stage, winning eight matches and losing six, with one game ending without a result.

Their campaign ended in the Eliminator, where the Mumbai Indians defeated them by 81 runs. Marcus Stoinis was LSG’s leading run-scorer with 408 runs, while Ravi Bishnoi topped their wicket charts with 16 wickets.

IPL 2024: LSG Finish Seventh

LSG missed the playoffs for the first time in 2024. They won seven of their 14 league matches and finished seventh in the standings.

KL Rahul remained a key contributor with the bat, scoring 520 runs. However, LSG could not maintain the consistency required to qualify for the knockout stage. The campaign marked the beginning of a difficult period after their consecutive playoff appearances.

IPL 2025: Rishabh Pant Joins LSG

LSG signed Rishabh Pant for ₹27 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, making him the most expensive player in IPL auction history at that time. He became the team’s captain, while Justin Langer continued as head coach.

The team again finished seventh and missed the playoffs, winning six of its 14 matches. Mitchell Marsh was their leading run-scorer with 627 runs, while Shardul Thakur finished as their leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets.

IPL 2026: Lucknow Finishes Bottom of the Table

LSG endured their toughest season in 2026, finishing tenth with four wins and ten defeats from 14 matches. They earned eight points and recorded a net run rate of -0.740. Their results eliminated them from playoff contention before the end of the league stage.

Mitchell Marsh was the team’s leading batter, scoring 563 runs. He became the first LSG player to record more than 500 runs in consecutive seasons. Prince Yadav led the bowling attack with 16 wickets and earned his maiden ODI call-up for India.

The season also featured individual highlights from other players. Rishabh Pant scored an unbeaten 68 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Mukul Choudhary hit an unbeaten 54 from 27 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders. Mohsin Khan recorded figures of 5/23 against KKR, and Nicholas Pooran scored 63 from 21 balls against Mumbai Indians.

After the campaign, Pant requested to step down as captain, and the franchise accepted his decision. In June 2026, LSG and Delhi Capitals completed a trade involving Pant and Kuldeep Yadav, marking another change in the team’s plans for the future.

Lucknow Super Giants Owner

LSG are owned by RPSG Sports Private Limited, the sports arm of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group. Dr Sanjiv Goenka is the franchise’s principal owner and chairman of the wider business group.

The franchise was established in 2021 after the BCCI invited bids for two new IPL teams. The group’s successful bid brought an IPL team to Lucknow, giving the city representation in the tournament from the 2022 season.

Lucknow Super Giants Captain and Coach

LSG have made changes to their leadership as they have moved through their first five IPL seasons.

  • Captain in IPL 2026: Rishabh Pant, who stepped down after the season.
  • Head coach in IPL 2026: Justin Langer.
  • Owner: RPSG Sports Private Limited.
  • Principal owner: Dr Sanjiv Goenka.
  • Home ground: Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.

The franchise’s official website identifies Justin Langer as head coach and lists the Ekana Stadium as the team’s home venue. The captaincy position changed after the 2026 campaign, so Pant’s role should be understood as applying to that season rather than as a confirmed future appointment.

Lucknow Super Giants Home Ground

LSG play their home matches at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The venue hosts IPL matches and provides the franchise with a home base for its league campaigns.

The ground has hosted several memorable LSG performances, including strong batting displays and important bowling spells. Mohsin Khan’s 5/23 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2026 was one of the season’s standout individual performances at home.

Key Players in Lucknow Super Giants History

KL Rahul

KL Rahul was LSG’s captain during their first three IPL seasons and played a major role in their consecutive playoff appearances. He scored 616 runs in 2022 and remained the team’s leading batter in 2024 with 520 runs.

Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran has been one of LSG’s most important attacking batters since joining the franchise in 2023. His aggressive approach has helped the team score quickly in the middle and late overs. Available franchise statistics through the 2026 season list him as LSG’s leading run-scorer, with 1,615 runs.

Mitchell Marsh

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has made a major contribution to LSG’s batting in recent seasons. He scored 627 runs in 2025 and followed that with 563 runs in 2026, becoming the first player in franchise history to record more than 500 runs in consecutive seasons.

Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis played an important role in LSG’s early seasons. He scored 408 runs in 2023 and remained one of the team’s most valuable all-rounders during his time with the franchise.

Ravi Bishnoi

Ravi Bishnoi was a key member of LSG’s bowling attack during their first four seasons. He took 16 wickets in 2023 and finished his LSG stint with 48 wickets, the most by any bowler for the franchise in the available career records through 2026.

Prince Yadav

Prince Yadav emerged as a leading bowler during the 2026 season. He took 16 wickets and earned his first ODI call-up for India, making him one of the campaign’s most encouraging discoveries for LSG.

Lucknow Super Giants Records

LSG have not yet won the IPL, but several players have established strong individual records while representing the franchise.
