Last month, the BCCI announced the India squad for the upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka that included Jasprit Bumrah, but his name had an asterisk attached to it, as Bumrah’s availability was conditional to fitness clearance from the BCCI COE.
Now, it seems that his participation in the series is almost unlikely, as a Times of India report suggests that the speedster has been ruled out of the tour of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka will host India in a two-Test series, starting August 15 in Galle, and the second Test match will be played in Colombo from August 23.
India are also slated to play a three-day warm-up fixture against a local Sri Lanka XI from August 7.
India’s last Test match was after the IPL, in June, against Afghanistan. Bumrah was rested from that fixture and had a layoff for a month-and-half. He returned in the ODI series in England in mid-July.
Bumrah played in the first two ODIs but missed the third ODI owing to a knee injury. Apparently, that knee issue is something much more than a minor injury and that could force him to miss the Sri Lanka Tests.

According to a report in Times Of India, Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka this month as the “seamer continues to feel discomfort in his left knee after an initial assessment from the BCCI CoE.” The report adds that the BCCI has decided “it’s not safe to push him back into cricket and advised a full recovery.”
With events like the Asian Games, New Zealand tour, and Border-Gavaskar Trophy lined up in the next few months, the BCCI opted not to rush him.
“There have been instances in the past where players have been rushed back to cricket, and have broken down. You can’t take that risk again. Especially with Bumrah. So complete recovery is the only goal and there is a lot of cricket left in the year,” a source told TOI.
It was earlier reported that Bumrah first faced this knee issue during the latter stages of the T20 World Cup. He then featured in 13 games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026, where clearly he was not at his best fitness and bowling rhythm, managing only four wickets in the tournament.
Apart from Bumrah, India’s squad includes three pacers: Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Brar. If Bumrah indeed is officially ruled out, then the uncapped J&K pacer Auqib Nabi seems to be the frontrunner to replace Bumrah in the squad.
